The celebrated author, In this admirable Essay,
clearly demonstrates, from a thlity years' sue

of self-abuse may be radically cured: pointing
out a mode ol cure at once pimple, certain and

matter what his condition may be. may cure him
self cheaply, privately, and radically.

tf"A Southwestern editor, speaking
of a fat contemporary, remarked that If
all llesh was grass, he must be a load of
hay. " I expect I am," said the fat man,
" from the way the donkeys are nibbling
at me."
H3T"A little boy was sent to a shop for
some eggs. Before reaching home he
dropped them. In answer to his moth
er, who asked. " Did you break any "
he replied: No, I didn't break any,
but the shells came oft some of them."
f-JTA young lady told a gentleman
that smoking was Injurious to his health.
" Why," said he, "there's my father, he
has smoked dally, and he Is now seven
ty." "Well, said she" " If he had never
smoked, he might bave been eighty."
ftA Hungarian exhibited In a phreno
logical museum two skulls of different
proportions. Whose is thelarge fckull,'
aeked a spectator. " It belonged to the
celebrated Atllla, King of the Huns."
And the small one V "Also to An
tiLla, but when be was a child."
(eST" You told me, sir, that the horse
was entirely without fault, and yet he Is
blind." The dealer looked boldly into
the irritated countenance of the loser by
the transaction, and said, with charm
ing naivete: "I do not regard blindness
as a fault, sir ; It is a misfortune."
US'" Why, Bridget," said her mistress,
who wished to rally the girl, for , the
amusement of her company, upon
the fantastic ornamenting of a plate of
butter. "Why, Bridget, did you do
this V You're quite an artist ; how did
you do it?" Indade, mum, it was my
self that did it," replied Bridget. "Isn't
it pritty, mum' I did It with your
fine-tooth-comb, mum."
C"" Well my man," said a philanthro
pist to a hardened-looking chap confined
in the New Orleans parish prison, what
are you in for V " In for thirty days, I
reckon," said the prisoner sullenly.
"No not that. What offense have you
committed?" didn't commit anything.
The Judge committed me." "Well,
you must have been accused of some
crime?" Oh, yes I was accused of try
ing to get on the police." "Nonsense.
Trying to get on the police is no crime.
I have myself recommended many
worthy men for positions on the police
force, and bave helped to get them on."
"It Is a fact." That is all I was sent
here for. You see, there were two of us,
and we both tried to get on the same
policeman. We had him down, but
some of the other peelers thought we
were crowding the man too hard, and
" "That will do sir," said the philan
thropist. " I understand your case per
fectly. Here are a few tracts for the Im
provement of your mind, which just
now appears to be a little warped."
A Very Hot' Time.
" Bakes alive," said the good-natured
Colonel Solon, as he rushed into the
Derrick office, " I never felt so warm as
this but once afore in my life, an' that
time it wasn't so awful hot in the at
mosphere, either." " When was it, Co
lonel ?" " Don't believe I ever told you ,
that did I ?" 'Twas some time ago. I
was llvin' in Jamestown, and was a re
spectable member of one of the church,
es, an' like all respectable members, had
a ticket for my sleepin' berth durin'
long sermons on hot days. One day
when it was more'n usually hot I was
just droppin' off to sleep when I thought
I'd wipe my forehead. . I felt but I
couldn't And my handkercher. Just
then I noticed sutbln' white on the floor
beyond my feet, an' bein' a little nigh
slghted I took it for my missing rag, an'
went for it. There warn't no partitions
below the seats in that are church, so
when I reached down I saw some one in
the pew front of me had a foot on my
handkerchief, an' It riled me a trifle, so
when I got hold of it I yanked about
200 weight on It the first haul. Bakes
alive 1 There was the alfiredest scream
yer ever heard, an' there I had got hold
of old maid Jenkins's summer dress an' -yanked
her off the scat an' under it into
my own pew afore I noed myself. She
flounced up in a second, with a long
dust mark down her lack, her hat jarxu
med over one eye, her sleev6 ripped open
an' half ber false hair hangin' down on
her shoulders. I Jest sot thar sort o'
stunned like, with the minister an' the
whole congregation watchln' her crawl
in' out from under my pew, look In' like
as if we'd been havln' a fight an' she'd
got the worst of it, an' me not-a-knowin'
what to say. I ain't abln to that church
since, an' as Miss Jenkins said I wag
drunk, they kind o' read me out of the
place, an' I never had a chance to vin
dicate my karakter."
