What Would You Know about Wood.
" There are various kinds of wood
hard wood, soft wood, dry wood, wet
wood, I would, you would, and lots of
others who would, too, if they got a
chance. Beams of the eye are . made of
I would.
Ships are built of hard wood, which
accounts in a measure for the
great hardships sailors are frequently
called upon to encounter, I've an
ocean. A ship constructed of soft wood
entirely would be a soft thing for some
body, but it wouldn't be the mariners
who attempted to' navigate it. Wood Is
not an ore, though an oar is generally
wood, and can be used o'er and o'er.
I once saw a sailor use one o'er, his
shipmate's head, and it took two police
men to make him give o'er.
Maple wood is the favorite variety
with juveniles on account of the sugar
it yields. It is a mistake, however, to
suppose that maple-sugar grows on the
tree In cakes, already crimped around
the edges. The cakes have to be care
full gathered first by means of a patent
picker (never shake the tree) and crimp-
ed afterwards. If any kind of wood
would please the children, maple wood."
Awfully Seared.
A bard old customer was Badger. He
was never known to attend church and
was considered the wickedest man in
the town in which he lived. One night
his old cow was prowling about the
house seeking what she may devour,
and stuck her head in the swill barrel.
By the time the barrel was empty, her
head was so far in the barrel that she
could not withdraw it, and she made a
blind rush to free herself from the in
cumbrance. As luck would have it she
struck a bee-line for the house, and di
rectly for the front door. The old man
was setting inside telling his family all
about the great murder trial, when the
cow gave a frightful bellowi which was
prolonged by the empty barrel into an
unearthly roar. At the same time the
front door crashed from its hinges, and
the cow with her uncommon head-gear,
bolted into the room. Old Wickedness
gave one look at the frightful demon
which confronted him; each separate
and individual hair stood on end ; a
shivering feeling crawled up and down
his back ; his eyes protruded from his
head; altogether he was a picture
of abject terror. Suddenly his tongue
was loosened and he screamed,
"For heavens sake take Mary she's
better prepared than I am 1" Since that
eventful night the man has joined an
easy going church, which Is one step
progressive, and he only swears when
he sees old brindle or the swill barrel.
The old cow " fetched him."
