THE TIMES, NEW BLOOMFIELD, PA. SEPTEMBER 0, 1879. A Girl s Exploit. Severn! weeks ago Kate Duroy, n intlier pretty little brunette of eighteen years, was iikluoed ty one of her mule acquaintances to leave W borne In Reading and come to this city. After being with him a while lie started hor out to steal, and conoooted a scheme of robbery In which she was to I lay the principal part. On the night of the 11th of August, under the man's di rections, Kate sneaked into the house of Mr. H Jt. Harrison, 121 south Thirty. wllrt.li street, and, hiking ofT her shoes, vonoesled herself In an up-stairs room, intending to go down lulo at ulght and ad mit her friend. Thapai tmeut happened to be occupied by one of the servants, and the latter, going up for some article, saw the girl suddenly crawl under the bed. The ml arm was given and a search made, but no -girl could be found. A soiled garter, how ler, was found ou the bed, aud a pair of shoes in the cellar, showing that a stranger had been in the house. The plan of the two thieves, it appears, was arranged so that Kate was to admit the man, and the two were to rob the place, sharing the plunder. All that night, however, people were Btirriug iu the house owing to the sickness of Mrs. Harrison, aud the f girl did not deem it safe to let in the man as she had promised. When daylight nr irived, fearful of being discovered, sho .-crawled into a chest, where she lay until .late at night, and when all appeared quiet she came out, visited the kitchen, obtain- ed something to eat, and returned up stairs. Again there were too many moving around, and at sunrise she again sought "dwcliest, remaining until the next night. Then sho ndmiited the man, but they quarreled ovor hor not having found the silverware, aud upon her threatening to sspoBO him he left. Sue then visited Mr. Harrison's room, purloined $3 from his r?et pocket, a pair of shoes and stockings 'belonging to a servant iu the house, and left. S'jo was soon after taken into cus tody, and the stolen wearing apparel and Cftfsh being found upon her, she ncknowl- edged the crlmo. JCato had a hearing at the Central Police Court on Saturday, and after Mr. Harrison had given in his evi- - deuce, aud tJia shoes and stockings sho wore -wore idcntilled by their owner, JliBS .DuFoy confessod everything. She was placed indor $15(10 bail to answer at court. I'iWa., North American. Ingenious Revenue Swindle. Collector Wiley and Deputy Collector JEbermaii closed the-clgar factory of IS. M. iSbirk,of Terry Hill, this county, yesterday, because of an ingenious device to defraud the revenue, which they discovered Fri day. The plan of "Making" an additional five dollar bill by taking parts of four other bills of the same denomination aud pasting them together, has been adopted with cigar ftnrops, four stamps bo converted into five and thus " making" one stamp, or in other words, defrauding the government out of Bixty cents on every five boxes of cigars stamped. The plan was to cut the word " hundred" out of three stamps, the word " ono" out of three stamps, and by manipulating the margin and industriously atid ingeniously pasting these pieces to gether you have five revenue stamps instead of four but not perfect ones, the word "hundred" being missing from one stamp and the word "one" from another. Mr. Shirk denies that this manipulation occurred in his factory although his brand appears on every box. As he manufactures 25,000 cigars per month, the carrying on of thia trick to any considerable extent might prove a great loss to the government. Collector Wiley put his seal on the estab lishment yesterday, and United States Commissioner Slayraaker issued bis war rant for shirk's arrest Saturday. Lancaa ter New Era.
