Hyp v 11C 11 a iiinu j;uid mi inuutcub hen to work over a porcelain egg, la he " This bread la eour," said Jones at tbe table, recently. "Yes," rejoined Btnlth; It's our bread if we pay for it; and the landlady looked relieved. B3T " Ma. lend me a pencil : I want to draw some ladles." " Draw some ladles I Why, Johnny, thU U Sunday." " Well, I'll draw them In their Sunday clothes." Proposition declined, with spanks. 65"" Are you building alr-castles in Bpain, Mr. Jones V" said a landlady to a boarder, who was thoughtfully regard ing his coffee-cup. " No, madame ; only looking over my grounds in Java," replied Jones. tsr At a recent performance in the New Haven Opera House, as a number of students left their seats between acts, a good lady was heard to observe: " Ain't it too bad those fellows have to go home and go to studying V" A bright boy was walking along the street with his mother, and, observ ing a man with a peculiar hitch in his gait approaching, he drolly exclaimed, " Look there, mammal bee how tnat poor man stutters with his feet." kiT A lady remarked to a popular divine that his sermons were a little too long. " Don't you think so V said she "just a little V" "Ah, dear madame," replied tne di vine. " I am afraid you don't like the sincere milk of the word." "Yes, I do," said she; but you know the fashion, now-a-days, is condensed milk." g- A lightning-rod peddler was struck . by lightning In Indiana, while seated on his wagon during a thunder storm, talking through the window of a farm er's residence trying to induce the farmer to let him rod the barn. It was the largest funeral ever seen in Indiana. People went miles to see the deceased. They couldn't believe it until they saw it with their own eyes. BJT At the battle of Shiloh a German officer rushed up to Qen. Grant and said: " Sheneral Shwartz's battery is took." " Well, sir," said Grant, " you spiked the guns before they were taken V" 'Vat I scplke dem new guns No, Sheneral, it would schpoil 'em." " Well, then, what did you do ?" " Do ? vy we went right in and took 'em pack again." S3" "My little seven-year-old girl," writes a friend, " was in the sitting room alone with her uncle, and dream ily looking from the window. Without turning her head, she said 'Uncle Horace, eight and seven make fifteen, don't they I" He replied that she was right. ' Then,' said she, In half solilo quy, 'it 1b only eight years before I shall have a beau, and, oh I 1 dread iV " Can't Get Enough. " Young man," said a stern old pro fessor to a student who had been charged with kissing one of his daughters "young man, don't get Into that habit. You'll find that kissing is like eating soup with a fork." " How so, Sir V" asked the student. " Because," answer ed the old professor, "you can't get enough of it." O A countryman, seating himself in a fashionable restaurant with the inten tion of eating a hearty dinner, summon ed a waiter and made known his purpose. The waiter skipped briskly away, and finally returned with a handsomely bound bill of fare, which he opened and placed before the guest, who pushing it away, scornfully observed : " O, come, now, you can't cram no literature down me ; vittals is what I want vittals, aud purty durned quick, too." Hard on the Drummer. In connection with drummers, the ex-purser of one of our rival steamers, who is now engaged as a traveling sales man, tells a good anecdote at his own expense. He, with some other gentle men, recently stopped for the night at the old brick hotel in Centrevllle, Md. While snugly seated in the sitting room, the voice of the landlord was heard uddressing the colored porter: "Any arrivals, John V" "Yes, sah." " How many V" "Three, sah," " Who are they V" " Two gemmensan' adrumaier, sah."
