8 THE TIMES, NEW BLOOM FIELD, PA., JUNE 2 J, 1879. A Remarkablo Conspiracy. A Haloigu dispatch anys : Mrs. Louisa Tloroe, a white lndy, was yesterday ar rested near this city, brought here aud lodged in Jail on a warrant charging her with having murdered her two Infant chil dren by burning their bodies in the fire place of her house. The preliminary trial beldby a Justice of the Peace this morn iog resulted in the discharge of Mrs. Pierce nnd the sending on to the Grand Jury of three of the principal witnesses, chargod with conspiracy to deprive Mrs. Pierce of liberty and with perjury. The facts are as follows, and prove one of the most diabol ical conspiracies on record : On the 80th of May, Mrs. Pierce gave premature birth to twins. The children were born dead and were placed in a small box for burial, but before they were buried neighborhood gossip had charged that the twius were born alive and the mother had destroyed them by burning. This coining to the ears of the parents the box contain ing the bodies was kept, and at their request a number of persons inspected It. Last Thursday, it being supposed the slauder was refuted, the bodies were buried. Yesterday a warrant was sworn out by a negro woman charging Mrs. Pierce with murder. A box was brought here by the ofllqer making the arrest, which was sup posed to have contained the bodies, but an examination by medical experts developed the fact that it contained the remains of a -chicken. One of the negro witnesses pro duced charred bones, which she swore was the carcass of one of the dead children, and was taken from the Ore in Pierce's house. These bones were clearly proven to be those -of a cat. From the testimony it was evident that the bodies of the children, as buried by the father on Thursday, had beeu un earthed, the remains taken from the box .and replaced by those of a chicken. Three of the conspirators one negro man and two negro women are now in . jail, aud it is believed that others are in the conspiracy and will be arrested. Mrs. Pierce is a Northern woman, hav ing moved here from New York Beveral years ago, and married William E. Pierce, a citizen of this county of good standing aud a graduate of distinction of Yale Col lege. Mrs. Pierce, being a Northern lady, and uuused to negro labor, has been un able to get along with them as servants ; ; uauce tho negroes in her neighborhood de- spise heq, ff4 this i supposed to be the vanliuvK'tftf the conspiracy. She Served Him Right. Norman Spencer stole $17,000 from the Pennsylvania Oil Company, that employed him as bookkeeper, and fled to the south west. The robbery was carefully planned, and the thief's intention was to take a new name, settle down as a planter, aud marry the Titusville girl to whom he bad long been engaged. She knew all about this scheme, aud was to join him as soon as practicable. A detective was set to watch her, and when she started westward, after receiving a mysterious letter, he guessed she meant to join her lover. He Bhadowed her on her journey so closely that she be came aware of bis watching. At Quincy, 111., she hired a woman of about her own size and shape to put on her traveling suit, cover her face with a veil, aud go to Chi cago. The detective unsuspectingly fol lowed the wrong woman, while the real one went on to meet the fugitive thief. Meanwhile Spencer had bought a planta tion near Galveston, Texas, and fallen in lovo with a neighbor's daughter. Desir ing to marry her, he wrote to the Titus ville girl at a poiut on her journey that she need not come to him. The Titusville girl was as quick at revenge as she had been at deceiving the detective. She at once in. formed the police where Spencer was, and be has been arrested. A Train Fired Into.
