The preservation of apples, potatoes, and the like by evaporating their Juices rapidly, is becoming an important in dustry in Ohio and Michigan. A cor respondent of a Detroit paper describe the operation of a factory in Lenawee county, having a capacity of four hun dred bushels a day. The apples are pared, cored, and sliced at once by hand machinery. The Blices are then spread on galvanized screens and then placed in the evaporater, a chamber running from the top of a large furnace in the basement upward, out through the roof of a three-story building. The current of heated air is kept as near as possible to two hundred and forty degrees. The screens of fruit rest on endless chains that move upward at intervals of three to five minutes, when a fresh screen is put in below and one is taken off at the third story completed. The dried or evaporated produce is then packed in pasteboard boxes holding from one to five pounds, and these in turn are pack ed in cases of two hundred pounds each. A bushel of apples makes about five pounds of the dried fruit ; and the pro cess of evaporation is so rapid that the ftult loses none of its freshness and flavor. In some of the factories the cores and peelings are converted into vinegar; in others into apple Jelly, out of which every variety of fruit jelly is made by the addition of flavoring ex tracts. Sweet corn, potatoes, and other vege tables have been successfully preserved by this process. The chief market for these products is the mining region of the west. Doubtless a large export trade will ultimately result from it. Cure for Corns. Corns are known as hard and soft, but their difference is entirely owing to lo cality. If a corn is situated between the toes, where it is kept moist by prespira tlon, it is of the soft variety; but if located on the outside of the toe, where it could get no moisture, it would neces sarily be hard. Corns are produced by by pressure or friction, and are simply a protective growth thrown out for the purpose of preventing the tissues being injured. v Corns are sufficiently painful at all times, but they are the most unbearable when an accumulation of pus takes place beneath them. The escape of this drop of pus i9 prevented by the hardened and thickened cuticle, which must be poulticed, or soaked in warm water, and then removed by a sharp-pointed knife. The entire corn can be taken out with a little care and patient work - without drawing a drop of blood. The application of caustics should be avoided in the treatment of corns, es pecially in old people, as fatal gangren ous inflamation may be the result. Temporary relief from a painful sore corn may readily be obtained by apply ing strong carbolic acid. Take the cork out of a small bottle of carbolic and apply it (the cork) to the corn. Relief will come at once, and you will be ena bled to walk with comparative comfort till you can find time to remove the corn with the knife. Hard corns may be treated as follows : Take a thick piece of soft leather or felt, cut a hole in the centre. Upon going to bed at night fill the hole in the centre of the leather with a paste made of soda and soap ; wash it off in the morning, and repeat the same process for several nights and the corn will be removed. Cleaning Paint. 1. For white paint, take up a small quantity of whiting on a damp piece of old white flannel and rub over the surface lightly , and it will leave the paint remark ably bright and new. 2. For cleaning old painted work preparatory to repainting, dissolve two ounces of soda in a quart of hot water. The mixture should be used when warm, and the woodwork after ward washed with water to remove the remains of the soda. Removing Warts. I have known of large and unsightly warts being removed by making a paste ol soda and water and keeping it con stantly on them. A pinch of saleratus put on a wart every night will give the excresence a pasMport to oblivion, the surest and most quiet way, and leave no traces behind.
