8 THE TIMES, NEW BLOOM FIELD, PA., Al'lilL 15, 1870. A Parent's Crime. The Philadelphia North American sayg- A cane of unusual gravity has been un: der the Investigation of the Society to Pro tent Children from Cruelty for tome days past. A week ago a gentleman named Chalfout, a resident of Jenklntown, called at the office of the Booiety and asked for its protection of a seventeen-year-old girl named Marguerite, who had been in , his employ about four years. lie said that a few days previous ber father, Owen MoMa bon, bad ordered her to return to bis house, but that she had refused to do so. After some persuasion she explained her strange conduct by saying that be- father was so btutal that she could not live With him ; that ber mother lout her reason, and is now an inmate of the Barclay Insane Asylum through bis brutal treatment of her, and that he had several times made criminal assaults upon ber younger sister. The last charge was by far the more serious, and Mr. Crew, the secretary, asked Mr. Cbalfont to bring, if possible, the younger sister to the room of the Soci ety. McMahon meantime had become more violent, and threatened to have his daughter arrested unless she came to live with bim. A day or two later Mr. Cbal font brought the young girl uamed Kate to the office, nud there she sobbed out the story of her father's crimes. Ilia arrest followed on Tuesday. lie was committed to prison in default of $2000 bail, to await trial on the chnrge of incest. The man had six children, all of whom, except Marguerite, the oldest, are now in care of :lhe Society. Black and WhlteNot to Marry. lticnMOND, Va., April 8. Edward Kin ney and Mary, bis wife, after a short hon eymoon, have arrived at the penitentiary here, under sentence of five years' impris ' onment. Kinney is a colored man of about ' forty ; the woraau is white, aud about 'thirty-five. They lived iu Hanover county for some months in improper intimacy, when, complaint being made to the author ities1, they went to Washington city, and were there united in marriage according to the laws of the District of Columbia. Some weeks after their return to Hanover they were arrested and indicted for vio lating the State law, which makes the in termarriage of whites and blacks felony. They were tried together before a white jury, and found guilty, aud their term of imprisonment was fixed at five years in the penitentiary. They are now actually with in the walls of that institution. It is un derstood that a strongly approved petition will be presented to the Governor asking for their pardon on couditiou that they leave the State forever. The law under which they were convicted bas passed un der the review of the Virginia Supreme Court, and pronounced constitutional and valid. Wants to Get Out. " Colonel" Rolland, the gentlemanly burglar who is now doing the State some service in the Eastern Penitentiary for his burglarious attempt on the Chambersburg Bank two years ago, was detected a few days ego in a well-laid plan to escape from prison. It seems that by some means be bribed the turnkey and obtained commu nication with bis wife, who is in Philadel phia. ' Numerous boxes were passed in to bim at different times. Suspicion was ex cited in some way and his cell was search ed, revealing ropes, books, a bank book showing bim to bave a considerable sum of money deposited in New York, and bis whole plan of escape written out in sym pathetic ink, by means of which they were able to tell just exactly bow he intended to escape. lie has since been placed in a more secure cell. Suffocated by Gas. Lancaster, Apiil 8. An accident oc curred last night at the house of G. Fink, in this city, which resulted in the death of a young girl, aged about 15 years, named Lizzie Dittmau. She was from the coun try, aud was yesteiday eugaged as a do mestic in the family. She retired to bed about 8 o'clock last evening, and not mak ing ber appearance this morning search was made, when she was found dead, suffo cated by escaping gas. It is supposed she blew out the gas-light instead of turning it .off. Fall of a Large Meteor. Chicago, April 9. Daring a thunder storm this evening, a meteor, which looked while in the air about a foot in diameter, fell to the ground ou the South side, burst ing into many pieces just before striking. It was white with heat, and the fragments resembled clinkers. The wire of a tele phone, connecting two business offices on the South side, was struck by lightning about the same time, and the electrio fluid entering the offices, played havoc with the furniture. Hard on the Beet. The cold weather bas proved disastrous to the bees in this vicinity, the time for them to come out and work having etapsed several weeks ago. We learn that Mr. Snyder Miller, of Oneida township, lost IS hives, and other bee keepers in the same township have also experienced losses from the same cause. Huntingdon " News.'
