8 Under a Stone by a Tree. Elisabeth, N. J., March 25. Several nights ago a burglar entered the house of William C. Stausbury, in Westfleld, and stole IMOO In money. Yesterday after noon Mr. Stansbury reoelved a letter, drop ped In the Westfiold Tost Oflloe, arid print ed with a lead pencil In rough black charac ters. The letter told him that If he would visit at midnight a certain apple tree on his plaoe he would find near it a atone with his money hidden under it. Mr. Staos bury'a wife advised him not to wait until midnight, but to go immediately, as no one would dare place the money there af ter he reoelved the letter for fear of detect ion, and if it was there already some one might accidentally overturn the stone and find it. Mr. Stansbury went to the designated place, found a stone, turned it over, and there lay a roll of bank notes. There was 11,000 in the roll. The letter snid that the writer was a woman ; that her husband had atolen the money while drunk ; and that she would pay back the remaining $400 as soon as she eould. Mr Htansbury is elated over the return of the bulk of stol en money. A Sad Affair at Sedalla, Missouri. St. Louis, March 25. A Bednlia, Mo., dispatch Bays a shocking afltilr was en acted on Saturday night in the neighbor hood of Bethlohem Church, Boone county, .lames Rowland a well-to-do bachelor farmer, had a nieee, Miss Julia Rowland, keeping house for him. On Saturday morn ing his brother came on a visit, and found the doors bolted and the windows fastened and hearing groans inside, he forced open the doors and found his brother in a pool of blood, a revolver by his side, and a bul let hole in his head. On the bed lay Miss Rowland.dcad, with a photograph by her side, on which was written, "Dear sister, I have taken poison and am going to my long and happy home. Tleaae forgive me for this." Rowland is still alive, but refuses to give a reason for the terrible affair. A rumor Is current that Miss Rowland's lover was not acceptable to her uncle ; and rather than Buffer separa tion, she took poison, and that Rowland, viewing the sad consequences, attempted to take his own life. A Terrible Tragedy In Frankfort, Kentucky. Frankfort, Ky., March 20. Judge J. M. Elliot, of the court of appeals, was assassinated in the street in front of the Capitol Hotel, at one o'olock to-day, by Thomas Buford, of Henry oounty. Judge Elliot had rendered an opinion averse to a oase Buford bad for some time in court. Buford loaded a double barrelled shot gun and waited for Elliot to come to dinner and walked up and shot him through the heart, without warning, killing him in stantly. The assassin was arrested and is now in jail. There is great excitement aud strong feeling against him. Buford after his arrest acknowledged that the other barrel of the gun was loaded for Judge I'ryor and he would have killed him also had not some children been in the way. Ho is a brother of Gen. Abraham Buford, TV i . county. Hickman, Ky., Mvch 23. The wharf boat belonging to Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway was burned here at two o'clock this morning. On board were tf. A. Douglass, clerk ; II. G. Comstock, operator ; James 8. Mayes, watchman j West Campbell and two unknown men waiting for a packet. A man named Jerry Ryan is missing. It is supposed he was also on board, as he was accustomed to go there to sleep at night. The watch be longing to James Mayes was found this evening in the debris, where a body burned to a crisp was recovered. The body could ot be recognized, but it is supposed to be that of Mayes. The deck falling prevent ed the recovery of the other bodies, as they were buried beneath in the hold. All ou board perished except Douglass and Comstock, who narrowly reached the shore rarely. The boat was a total loss ; no insurance. The destruction or the boat was the work of au incendiary, as there was no light or Are in the cargo box where the Are originated. The boat was new ftnH valtiof at All IMn End of the Vanderbllt Suit. New York, March 25. This morniug Judge Donobue, by consent of counsel,en tered orders dismissing the suit of Cor nelius J. Vanderbllt, for a million dollars alleged to have been promised for with drawing opposition to the probata of the Commodore's will, and also a similar order iu the suit of the same plaintiff for seven million dollars damages for alleged conspi racy by W. H. Vanderbllt, C. M. Depue and others to get someone to imperson ate him and have reports of his supposed misconduct sent to the commodore by de tectives. This ends the whole case, as no appeal is to be taken from the surrogate's admission of the will to probate. A Funeral Train Interrupted. The funeral sorvioea over the remains of Mrs. Richmond, or Milford, Mich., were interrnpted twioe in order to allow medical examinations to see whether she were real ly dead.
