With stately dignity he rose Irfhls place and said: "Your Honor Is right and I am wrong, as your Honor generally Is." There was a dazed look In the Judge's eye, and lie hardly knew whether to feel happy or fine the lawyer for contempt of court. The Difference. "What made you quit tho Kastr" said a man In Nevada to a new-comer. "I got into trouble by marrying two wives," was the response "well," said the other, "1 came out here because I got Into trouble by marrying only one wife." "And I," added a bystander', "came here because I got into trouble simply by promising to marry one." His challenge was accepted, and pointing to the opposite shore of the river he. asked "Is not that one side of the river?" "Yes," said the man ; "and is not this the other side)"' "Certainly," said the other. "Then," said the man, "pay me the wager, for by your own confession I Lave proved that this side of the river is the other side." The dumb-profound logic, immediately paid tbe money. How an Election Was Won. Some years ago, Ituss, our own G. W., was a Republican candidate . for BherifT in the Democrat to county of Ripley and, as a matter of course, want ed all the votes he could get. Then as now he was passionately fond of gun ning and always owned a fine gun and dogs. In this county was an old Ger man, we will call Jake. He also was a hunter and a power among "the boys." He kept a country doggery and hl "influence" was worth about thirty votes. In due time Ituss met Jake and a talk about bunting, guns and dogs rather warmed the Dutchman towards Ituss, although Jake was s Democrat. After a while Ituss saw one of Jake's lank, pot-bellied pointers, and commenc ed to give away taiTy. , "Jake," said Ituss, "that's a mighty fine dog. Where did you get him 1"' Jake replied to the effect that be raised that kind of dogs. "Well, I'll tell you," said Ituss, "I am very fond of hunting, and if I am elected Sheriff this fall shall Indulge myself in shooting to my hearts content. If I am not elected I will not be able to shoot much. I will give you $o0 for that dog, Jake, If I want him after the election. Here's$5toblnd the bargain." Jake, tickled to death at the fine sale of his dog, which was worth about CO cents, took the bill, and as a consequence his end of tbe county gave Ituss a handsome majority and be was elected, barely pull ing through. Time passed and Ituss was duly installed in the ofllce of BherifT of Ripley county. Boon Jake pnt in an appearance, dragging the unwilling cur at his heels. " Mister Ituss," said Jake, "you vos now elected BherifT von dis gounty nnd here Is dose do. Gifmemy vorty-vife dollars." "Jake," said Iluss, "I find that my time will not allow me to bunt as much as I thought it would , you may keep tbe dog and the $5 too." Jake studied a long time, ami then took a long breath and said : "Mister Russ, I pelieve you buy me and not my dog ! Alnt id ?"'
