Dec. 12th, 1878. O Mr. Editor. Dear BiO The Loysville debating society met on last Wednesday evening. The house was crowded and the evening passed off pleasantly. Cl'he following officers were elected for a term of one month : President, Jacob Kickard Esq. ; Vice President. Dr. Alex ander; Secretary, 11. W. Dromgold; Treasurer, Frank Gensler. The question selected for the next evening is: Kesolv ed, That a liar is more injurious to a community than a thlef. Then follow ed an interesting discussion on question ; llesolved, That there is more pleasure in possession than in pursuit, after which we adjourned to meet one week hence. Yours &c. It. W. Dromgold. Juniata County. We copy the follow ing from the Juniata county papers of last week. Teachers' Institute met at 2 o'clock, on Monday afternoon, and the court being in session, organized in the Grand Jury room. The sessions are now being held in the court room. On Tuesday morning of last week, a coal oil lamp while lighted exploded at the residence of Mr. 1). M. Lebo, Port lloyal, breaking the lamp into a thou sand pieces, scattering the burning oil around the room. No serious damage resulted from the explosion, as the flames were quickly subdued. In the case of Mrs. Mary Ann Bhene lof and her daughter, Mary Hhenelof, who were charged with having mur dered the infant child of the latter by beating it on the head with a billet of stove wood, the jury came into court at half-past 2 o'clock on Tuesday, with a general verdict of not guilty, and the accused, after having uudergone a fear ful ordeal for four days and nights, were set at liberty, to the great joy of their friends. Cumberland County. We copy the fol lowing from the Cumberland county papers of last week : The smoke house on the premises of John Shelly, In Lower Allen township, was recently robbed of all its contents. The store of John Grissinger,in North Middleton township, wes also robbed of a small amount of goods a few nights ago. A few mornings since Judge Herman rendered his decision overruling the motion for a new trial in the case of Wm. Geese, convicted of murder in the second degree, and sentenced the pris oner to seven years and three months in the eastern penitentiary. Mr. Shearer, counsel for defendant, at once gave no tice than an appeal would be taken to Supreme Court. The Enterprise says : " A little dog belonging to Thomas Gill,of Big Spring, the other day followed a rabbit some distance in a hole under some rocks, but failed to come out. Next day an effort was made to release him, but owing to a heavy rainfall the work was abandoned. On the following day, however, the rocks were quarried out and the dog found dead, the imprisonment evidently being too much for his sensitive nature. The rabbit seemed none the worse for bis strange companionship." On Wednesday evening a serious ac cident befell a young man named Longs. dorf, residing at Centrevllle. He Is in bad general health and haa been for a long time subject to " fits." On the evening named he was using his pocket knife, felt one of his sick spells coining on, and in his alarm thereat put the knife Into his pocket without closing it. The threatened Bpell did not attack him, and he, forgetting the knife in his pock et, started for the stable and tripped over a stick of wood, in the fall thn blade of the knife cutting the spermatlo artery. He felt no Inconvenience or evidence of a hurt for sometime, the wound, strange to iy, not bleeding at once. When the injury was discovered In was bleeding furiously, and much trouble was had In checking the flow. Drs. Kleirer and Dale of Carlisle were summoned and gave the case the necessary attention.
