8 A Kingdom for Gen. Grant. A London paper's I'hillppopolls coups pomlmit tolojirnphs on the highest author ity, but attaohes no Impnrtnuoe to the report, that Gen, Grant has been proponed ns cnmlitlate for the Bulgarian throne. It socms however, that there la gome foun dation for the repoi t. Under the provision! of the Hint nnd third nrtiolos or the treaty oflJorlin, Bulgaria In constituted an mtto matlo tributary principality, under the suzerainty of Uio Bullaii, with a Christian government nnd a national militia. The Prlnue Is to lie elected by the population, and their choice Is to bo Approved nnd confirmed by tho Porte, nnd by England, France, Oermnny, HubhIii, Austria, and ltftly. No member vf any reigning Euro penu dynasty Is eligible to tho post, and this provision of the treaty has greatly lim ited the number of oligiblo candidates. (Jen. Grant's reputation ns a soldier nnd ruler, it is said, has led the Bulgarian nobles, who aro debating among themselves the question of a ruler nod dotullB of the now constitution, to look upou him ns a most desirnblo Prince. It is urged that ho would be omluoutly fitted for tho post. UDdor the provisions of llm treaty of ller lin.pei feet equality in political and relig ious rights is to bo extended to all tho inhabitants of Bulgaria, and it is thought that a wholly impartial foreigner like Gen. Grant can best secure the execution of laws designed to secure this equality. A Hotel Keeper finds a Woman's Head. A dispatch from Troy, New Yoik, says : "This morning Mr. Case, a hotel keeper at Saratoga, was horrified to Hud the head of a woman on the piazza of his hotel. A dog was eiting tho llesh from it. Follow ing the trail of the dog to a spot in a grove about 200 feet from tho hotel, tho arniB, legs and other portions of a womau's body were found, all of them being in a decayed condition. A small pistol wus found near by. The head hud a bullet hole in it. The remains wore recognized us those of a sev enteen year old girl, Alice Itefyeit, whose parents lived in Saratoga. Several weeks ago she wus employed as a servant iu Case's lintel, but disappeared suddenly. No trace has since been hud of her until her horribly mutilated remains wore found to-day. It is supposed that the girl com mitted suicide." Marrying In Haste. Last July a Miss llaggerty visited Ocouu Grove, where she met a fascinating young man who called himself Henderson. After a very short courtship they were married and visited New York, where iu a day or two, the groom deserted the bride, taking all her jewelry, money, &o. Search by the brother-iu-law was made for the truuut, but he has not been apprehended, but it lias bceu discovered that he 1b a "marry ing" niau, with quite a number of wives whom ho has married to rob. Girls should know men as thoroughly as possible before forming with them tho most sacred tio of life. Sudden Fall of Silver. Considerable excitement was caused on Fourth street below Chestnut, Tuesday, by the bursting of a canvass bug containing about eighteen hundred dollurs in silver. As the bright pieces rolled promiscuously over the pavement, a large number of per sons were attracted to the sceno, and it was found uecessary to call upou the police to keep tho " I will help you pick them up sir" portion of the orowd back. It took some time to gather the coiu up, and strauge to say there was not, so far as could be ascer tained, a singlo piece missing. Philadel phia Press. A Terrible Tragedy. A special dispatch says Joseph Stoddard, his wile aud child, wore found dead at their home at Pine Plains, Allegan county, Michigan, on Saturday. The head of the wife aud child were blown to atoms as' they lay iu the bed. It is evident that Stoddard committed the deed, as when found he was sitting upright iu a chair with a title betweeu his legs, his hand tightly grasping the muzzle of the gun. He bad often threatened to kill his wife lie was of an ugly disposition aud lived a dissolute life. Woodbine, December 8. On Saturday night the dwelling of Mr. Ilichard Cham pion, who resides within about two miles of Tuckuhoe, Capo May eouuty, was enter ed by burglars while the family were asleep, aud $1,118 stolen. The money was the proceeds of Mr. Champion's recent sale of his crauberry crop, and the burglar or burglars must have known of the pres ence of this mouey in the house, Eutrauce was aiTected by the use of a crowbar takeu from the saw mill of Captain P. M. Wbeaten, near by. There is no positive clue to the robbers. tSyUobert Lopaz, a farmer of Ashville, N.Y., caused the death of his daughter, eight years old, by snapping a cup on a gun which be had taken down to clean, A neighbor who bad borrowed the weapon left a heavy load in it, which was unknown to Lopaz. The ramrod, which was iu the barrel, passed entirely through the body of the child, making a frightful wound. She died soon after. ASSIGNEE'S SALE OF VALUABLE! REAL ESTATE!
