An old man who owns a atall under took a few days since to use hla spare time to better his education. Procuring a spelling book, his face was seen behind It Whenever business was dull. lie tired. however, of spelling the words to him self and engaged the service of a boy about thirteen years old, having the next stall to hear his lesson. Everything passed off all right for two or three dnyg and then a storm arose and a climax come. Holding the book In both hands the boy observed : " We now come to the word " wel come, llow tlo you spell H?" " Well, sir, I spell It ' w-e-l-c-u-m-' " " Not correct." "K-o-m, then." " Nary." " Then It Is k-o-o-m." " No, sir." " Boy, don't you lie to me," warned the old man. " I'll resign my office," replied the lad as he laid the book down. " I've let you go on and spell "cat" with a "k,"and "horse" without an " e," " boy" with a double " o" to It, because you are old and I don't want to hurt your feeling; but when you call me a liar, and don't even know how to spell the word, it's time for me to resign." gig" Several years before Chief Justice Taney's death, the Government office at Washington had occasion to send him some proof slips of an important decis ion, and they were intrusted to a printer boy, who appeared at the Judge's office and before the Judge with : "Is Taney in r" " I presume you wish to see the Chief Justice of the United States?" " I don't care a cuss about him. I've got some proofs for Taney." " I am the Hon. Roger B. Taney." " You're Taney, aren't you I" " I am not, fellow. I am the Hon. Roger B. Taney." " Then the proofs are . not for you," and the unceremonious messenger would have gone off with them If the Judge had not admitted himself to be Taney simply. S- A little three-year old girl who volunteered to say grace at the table, did so as follows : ' Oh, Lord, bress the things we eat; bress mamma and pap, and gamma and gain pa' and here casting up her eyes to her grandfather in the next seat, and discovering that he was smiling, the lit tle one closed her prayer by saying, "Behave yourself, gampa for Christ's sake. Amen." H- " I want, and will have, a wife without a failing," was the remark of a young man who had three seasons' ex perience of life. His sister, with only a country girl's philosophy, remarked : " Then you will never marry ,because, should you find such a woman, she'll be sure to want a husband of the same character." tjg" A cockney Inquired at the post office the other day for a letter for " Henry Hogdon." He was told there was none. " Look 'ere," he replied, a little an grily ; " you've hexamined a hodd letter for my name. It don't commence with a haltch ; It begins with a ho. Look in the 'ole that's got the bo's." " Now, then, Madam, please look steadily at this place on the wall," said a photographer to an old lady, when he had put her in position and the plate in the camera. The old lady looked hard at the place indicated, then got up and walked across the floor and minutely in spected it, and then turning gently re marked : " I don't see anything there." 2" Expectant Children. Cissy. " Ta's going to bring us home some thing to-night ; I wonder what it will be." Tommy. " Yes, but suppose he does not see anything 't" Cissy. " Oh,then he will bring some thing else, of course." rSfWhena new b-y appears at a Lewlstown school, the other boys don't say anything to him at all, unless, It is to inquire : " Say, you, what's yer name?" "Who's yer daddy V" " Where d'ye live ? " " What reader are yer In r" " Is them yer Sunday close V" Mrs. A : " Now, Mr. B., will you come and see our apiary V" Mr. B. (who has been putting It off all the afternoon) : " Well, Mrs. A.,the thing Is I'm rather afraid of mon keys." '
