Tics (7 Of all things known farmers agree that a mortgage Ja eaaleflt to plant and hardest to raise. W A Weotern tourist, to whom an Italian monk was showing a consecra ted lamp, at Home, which had never gone out during five centuries, gave the flame a puff, and coolly observed : " Well, I guess It's out now." tW Young Tat, in search of educa tion, wag told by a teacher that his charge for tuition was two guineas the first month and one guinea the second. " Then, beJaUrs," said Tat, " I'll be gin the second month now." HJTA doctor went out for a day's hunting, and, on coming home, com plimented himself that he hadn't killed anything. "That's because you didn't attend to your legitimate business," said his wife. jy" Sambo, what do you suppose is the reason that the sun goes toward the South in the winter?" " Well, I don't know, massa ; unless he no stand de climate ob de Norf, and so am obliged to go to de Souf, where he 'gperiences warmer longitude." VW When a book-pedlar sees three pairs of cardinal-red stockings hanging from the clothes-line in a Peoria back yard, he assails the house with the "Language of Flowers" and the "Al bum of beauty ;" but if he sees only one pair of gray stockings, and those well darned, he goes in and tackles the old lady with a "Tupper's Proverbial Phllopophy." f" A little boy from New York went into the country, visiting. He had a bowl of bread and milk. He tasted it, and then hesitated a moment ; when his mother asked him if he didn't like it. To which he replied, smacking his lips: " Yes, Ma. I was wishing our milk man would keep a cow." A liquor seller called upon a local bard to get a motto for a new sign-board which he was getting painted. He wanted something funny, and the poet gave utterance to the following : Bum and whisky, ale and beer ; Ileggar made and mended here When nothing's left to pay the score, I'll take and kick him to the dour. How She Fixed Him. The young man was evidently honest in his intentions, but three years of con stant courting had failed to overcome his excessive bashfulness. They were sitting in chairs at a respectful distance apart. Said the young man, having spent five minutes in search of a subject : " How do you get along with your cooking?" "Nicely," replied the young miss; " I'm improving wonderfully. I can make splendid cake now." " Can you ?" said the young man in a pleased manner. "What kind do you like best?" " I like one made with flour and sugar and citron and ralsons and currants, and lots of those things, and beautiful frost ing on top," responded the young miss. " Why, that's a wedding cake," ex claimed the young man nervously. " I meant wedding," said the young miss, shyly. A Wonderful Curiosity. One of Peoria's prominent lawyers went home the other day to dinner, and found that his little boy had bad his head clipped in accordance with the prevailing style. Affecting not to no tice it, he began to speak of a wonder ful curiosity on exhibition in Washing ton City, in the shape of a living crea ture with a form something like that of a human being. Its head was as round as a pumpkin, it's ears stuck out like clam-shells on a cocoanut, iU nose pro. jected like a figure four from what seemed to be its face ; it walked upright, and its head was covered with a growth of bristles about one-sixteenth of an inch in length, and for want of a better name the creature had been called the "What is it?" And placing his hand on the boy's head, the father said : Why, here it la now. Here's the very thing I've been talking about." The boy replied, as he buttered a piece of biscuit: "They've got a blamed sight worse looking thing right here in Peoria." "What kind of a thing is it?" said. the lawyer. "It is the father of the 'What la. It?" retorted the lad. The subject was dropped.
