A Dutohman't Narrow Escape.
Hermon Hehuster,of St. Louia, awoke
the other morning to And himself dead.
That Is to any, the newspapers said he
was dead and that his body was at that
moment at the morgue. Mr. Schuster
went to the plane mentioned, and there,
sure enough, found himself laid out on
a slab, dead as anybody could wIbIi to
be. The forehead of the corpse was ex
actly like his own. The moustache
likewise. The body wouldn't vary in
weight five pounds from the weight of
his own. The clothes of the inanimate
person were as much his own as if he
had worn them himself. 'Vot inn de
golorofbls eyes V" asked Hermon of
Dr. Alnbaugh. The doctor turucd up
the corpse's eyelids and found that the
eyes were blue, "Dot lsh petter," said
Herman, with a long sigh of relief.
',Dotlhiiot mine pody. Dose eyes is
plueand mine is pluck, Golt in Him.
mel I what a narrow eshoape vot a
glose gall dose vas I" It was the most
remarkable case of mistaken identity
that St. Louis has had in years.
tJjT A practical Joker, a prudent man
withal, had gone to a cafe and ordered a
three masted schooner of beer, when a
friend appears at the door and beckons
to him to go out for a nil utile. The In
tending drinker is afraid that in this ab
sence some one may get away with the
liquid, when a hnppy thought strikes
him, and he raps around the handle of
the mug a scrap of paper hiscribed : " I
kuve spit in this !" With a light heart
he hastens to the door, communicates
with his friend, and returns to find
written in another hand beneath his
warnlhg: " So have I."
"Och, Jamie, did ye niver hear
uv my great spache aSure the Hibernian
Society V"
" No, Tat, how should I ? for sure I
was not on the ground "
" Well, Jamie, you, see I was called
upon by the Hibernian Society for a
spache ; and, be jabers, I rose with the
inthusiastio sheers of thousands, with
me heart overflowing with gratitude,
and me eyes filled with tears, and divil
a word did I spake!"
fi.y " Injured Burglar" writes- as fol
lows to a Saratoga newspaper. "Mr.
Editor: In reading your account of the
burglary at Knowe's boarding house,on
Washington street, you said I over
looked a lady's diamonds worth thou
sands. The statement is Incorrect, I
saw, examined and left them they were
paste. Your account is no compliment
to me."
O At a popular store famous for the
prompt and polite attention of the clerks
a woman of perhaps thirty years was
looking at goods, when a young man
stepped toward ber and asked :
" Is any one waiting upon you y"
" Why, M'hat a question ! I've been
married these ten years."
C"A lady at sea, full of delicate appre
hension in a gale of wind, cried out
among other pretty exclamations : "We
shall go to the bottom ; mercy on ns ;
how my head swims I" "Madam, never
fear," said one of the sailors ; "you can
never go to the bottom while your head
swims."
l""Come, pa," said a youngster just
home from school, "how many peas are
there in a pint J?" wHow can anybody
tell that, you foolish boy?" "I can,
every time. If you don't believe it, try
me." . "Well, how many are there,
then ?" ''Just one p in every pint, pa."
O" A French priest recently gave
out an announcement as follows: "If
it rains in the morning tbe procession
will take place In the afternoon ; and if
it rains in the afternoon the procession
will take place in the morning."
O An old lady going to a chandler's
for a farthing candle, and, being told
that it was raised to a half-penny on ac
count of the Russian war, exclaimed :
"Bad luck to them ! And do they fight
by candle-light V"
CiT Sam, you are not honest. Why do
you put all the good peaches ou the top of
the measure and the little ones below ?"
"Same reason, sab, dat makes de front
of your house all marble and de back
gate chiefly elop-bar'l, sab."
' "What are you about?" angrily
exclaimed a country editor the other
day to his wife, who was touching up
her complexion before the mirror. " On
ly getting up my 'patent outside
dear," was the reply.
