A San Francisco man reports having seen a snake fifty feet long. A drunk of that kind would cost at least $200 in this State. We notice a clergyman says that " many persons lack the courage to ap- E ear as good as they really are." That i the trouble with us. A Well has been bored in the Ceme tery in this borough, for the purpose of getting water for the flowerB and shrub bery. , The festival of the M. E. Same charges. Adults 15 cts. Children 10 cents.' In Huntingdon County a few days ago a man wounded a squirrel, which ran into the trunk of a large oak. On reaching into the hollow of the trunk an old oven filled with Danish doublooiiB, Mexican dollars, English sovereigns and other coins, all dated previous to 1820, amount ing to several thousand dollars, were found. It Is supposed the money was secreted by " Lewis the robber," who re lieved many a wagoner on the old Pitts burg and Philadelphia pike. Got His Money's Worth. We remember hearing of on old lady who, to save a lot of Biicotash which threatened to sour from the effect of a thunder storm, called up the children in the night to eat It, and the next day had to call the doctor to save the children. The old lady must have a brother living in Sa ville township, as one of the residents of that part of the county, during last term of court stopped at one of our hotels, and was shocked to find that the charge for dinner was forty cents. De termined to pave his money he said if that was the charge he would ' try and eat the worth of it, and so well did he succeed that he was ill from the ef fects of it for two weeks. As the man tells the story on himself it is no doubt true. Effects of Lightning. During the thun der storm on Thursday afternoon the barn of David llarshbcrger, about a mile west of Mattawana, Mifilln county, was struck twice by lightning, and with the hoy, grain, wheat and other produce therein was totally consumed. Two tramps coming down the road had taken shelter in the vngon-shed,and when the building was struck, at the solicitation of the women, (no men being about the house at the time), proceeded to get out the colts, but before they had accom plished it a Becond Btroke stunned one of the tramps. He was drawn into the barnyard by his companion, where he recovered, when they again got to work and succeeded in releasing all the stock except two calves in a back stable. By this time the station hands came up, burst open the barn doors and got out the reaper and some other implements, and the women secured most of the harness. In fifteen or twenty minutes the whole building was a mass of flame, and all that the bystanders could do was to wit ness its complete destruction. The loss will probably reach from $2,000 to $2,f00 on which there Is an Insurance of $000. Camp Meeting Daily. Remarkable Cave Discovered in Hunting don County. Some time ago a Mr. Neff, residing near Alexandria, Huntingdon county, went to his well, to get a drink, and found it dry. He then went down into the well to make repairs, and was much surprised to find not a pint of water, and the bottom fallen out. A cool breeze blew up strong enough to rustle the leaves of a tree standing near. He tied a lantern to a rope one hundred feet long and let it down and as the lan tern still burned he rightly concluded that the air was pure. He then procured a spliced ropethree hundred feet In length and to the end attached a basket containing a lantern, a dog and a cat. He let them down', striking bottom at two hundred and ninety-one feet. At the end of six .hours,, the basket was brought up, . The lantern Was still burn ing, and the only visible effect on the dog and the cat was chilliness. The next day the owner of the well accom panied by a trusty neighbor, Mr. Lef ford, descended to the bottom. What was their surprise to find an immense cave, stretching miles and miles in every direction. Stalagmites and stalactites of magnificent gorgeousness lent beauty and variety to the otherwise tomb-like scene. Here and there a flowing stream of water rippled over stony beds, while thousands and thousands of bats flutter ed their clammy wings, surprised at the intrusion of man. Petrified seashells of a hundred varieties strewed the floors and protruded from the strata. After spending ten or twelve hours of contin uous wondering, during which time they penetrated beneath and beyond Alexandria, and discovered a vein of nickel ore and a nugget of metal resem bling antimony, they returned to the surface, where their half stricken wives clasped them to bosoms, thinking they had been lost. It Is supposed that this cave is con nected with those at Warrior Ridge and Sinking Valley, only a few miles away. Specimens of the nickel ore have been Bent to Philadelphia and analyzed and pronounced superior to the nickel of eith er Lancaster or Germany, the only two places on the globe where it it now mined. A four-year old son of David Louder, who lives in Fermanngh township, had his right arm broken between the wrist and elbow, last Friday, by a fall from a mule, that was one of three mules, that was pulling at a boat, that was " stuck," a hort distance below the second lock north of town. A lamp In the house occupied by Jas. Dunn, on Third street, exploded last Friday evening about half past eight o'clock, scattering the oil over the carpet and setting fire to everythlnk that It reached. The family was so confused by the occurrence, that effective work on their part against the flames was al most entirely destroyed. Mr. George Smith, who on his way to a meeting of Sabbath School teachers held In the Lutheran church, saw the trouble from the pavement, and rushed in and helped to smother the fire. A heavy piece of oilcloth was the most effective weapon in the smothering process. Sentinel. The following Is the Republican Coun ty Ticket: Congress, Louis E. We copy the fol lowing from the Cumberland county papers of last week : Two bushels of rats were recently taken from a well In Oakvllle. The fla vor of that well must have been border ing on the delegability of the water at fashionable watering places. Charles, son ofWm. Young, of the First ward, was budiy gored by a cow, near Jackson's livery, on Bedford street, on Sunday. The little fellow suffers very much from his injuries. Last week a number of market men on their way from Frankford township to Carlisle, were stopped by tramps aud a small sum of money demanded. The demand in some cases was complied with. William Rider, of Mt. Holly Springs, was arrested and lodged in the county jail last Wednesday for breaking into the dwelling of Mr. George Brindle, at Boiling Springs, and carrying away a lot of meat, knives, &c. The stolen property was found In his possession. Jacob D. Hoover, of South Mlddleton, tenant of Mrs. Martin, threshed on the 10th inst., 61-1 sheaves of wheat, which yielded by measure 64 bushels. This wheat was delivered at the warehouse of Harry Snyder, and weighed 00J pounds to the bushel. On Friday night, between nine and ten o'clock, an attempt was made to steal one of W. A. & A. F. Mullln's blooded horses. Fortunately, Mr. Jos. M'Bride, who was passing the barn at that time, and seeing a stranger in the horse stable, gav e the alarm when the thief hastily lied. On Saturday night a horse was stolen from the stable of Samuel E. Heberlig, who lives a short distance west of New ville. From the fact that a bridle was scccured in another stable, it is believed the thief was some one familiar with the place. A saddle was also taken. During the storm, on Thursday last, the lightning struck the barn of Mr. Benj. Nickey, near the Stone Church, in Frankford township, and tearing off a number of the shingles passed down through the building and struck a valuable cow, killlug her in stantly. No other damage was done, and a calf at the side of the cow was un injured. . . . .; A somewhat destructive hail storm passed over this vicinity on Saturday afternoon. Its line of severity seemed to be west of town covering not a very wide belt in the direction of Newburg. Some of the stones were enormously large and came to the earth with a whizz. Corn fields belonging to James and Jo seph Koons, Alexander M'Caleb, Peter Myers, John Kllllan and others suffered severely. Some of the largest stones came to the earth Jagged edged and measured fully six. inches in circumfer ence. Hogs belonging to Jos. Koons, were found much cut on their backs by the hail. We have received a number of hard green apples with deep indentations in them, besides being broken and split showing the force of the hail. Aewvillo &tar. Church Notices.
