" I'm a Dunce, Sir." .
" What's your nBrnel'" teacher out
In the country aeked a new pupil.
" I'm a dunce, sir," replied the boy.
The teacher's eyes dilated a little, and
thinking he hadn't understood, Bald :
" What did you say V"
" I'm a dunce, sir," repeated the boy
who was rather a bright-looking lad.
" You're a dunce, are you " said the
teacher, smiling,
" No, sir," said the boy.
Why, didn't you sity so 1"
"No, sir,"
" Yes, you did."
"No, sir."
The teacher was about to appeal to
the school to sustain him when a thought
struck him, and turning to the. boy he
asked :
" What is your first name V"'
"Isaac, sir."
"And your nextS"'
" May, sir."
The teacher was quivering with excite
ment now, and he was fairly trembling
with eagerness as he asked :
" And the last V"
"Dunn, sir."
"Now, say It again, the whole of It,"
shouted the pedagogue.
" I. May Dunn, sir."
" Boys," yelled the teacher, "always
take care and be correct and particular in
your pronunciation. Let this be a warn
ing to you."
For the Credit of the Family.
A young gentleman was passing a
little girl on Seventh street yesterday
who was sitting on the doorsteps and
making' the air melodious humming
over a tune. He was interested by the
sweet and Intelligent appearance of the
child, and accosting her the following
dialogue took place :
" Sissy, what's your pa's name V"
This was politely answered by the
little girl.
" How many brothers have you ?"
" Four or five."
" How many sisters?"
"Four or five."
The young man' curiosity being satis
fled he passed on. The mother of the
little four-year-old ( who had neither
brother or sister) overheard the conver
sation, and calling her In asked her why
she had storied to the man and received
the foiling cute reply :
"Well, mamma, I didn't want the
gentleman to thing we were so poor as
to have no children." Columbia ( O).

." Not goot cheese," Got in himmel it

" Put your nose down and smell it
then," replied his customer.
,The saloon keeper placed his nose
down to the cheese, and then toward the
feet on the table, and as he raised up
turned to the chap and said in an in

" Dake off dose feets vrom dere dable,

CaT The following has been on its
travels in the newspapers for sometime,
and it will soon be seasonable, we give
it for what it Is worth :
" Father, who travels the road so late f "
"Hush, my child, 'tis the candidate.
Fit examples for human woes
Early he comes and early he goes,
He greets the wo men with courtly grace,
He kisses the baby's dirty face,
He calls to the fence the farmers at work, '
He bores the merchant, he bores the olerk, .
: The blacksmith, while bis anvil rings.
He greets, and this Is the song he sings :
'Howdy, howdy, howdy do?
How is yom wife, and bow are you?
Ah 1 It fits my first as no other can,
The horny lirst of the worklngman.' "
Sir The jokers who Included a piece
of stained brick among the " geological
specimens" which they placed upon the
desk of the professor as objects worthy
of his explanatory remarks, received
the following rebuke : Taking up one
of the specimens, he said : " This is a
piece of feldspar from the Portland
quarries. And this," coming to the
brick, " is a piece of impudence from
some member of the class."
ir A fair one wrote to her lover, beg
ging him to send her some money. She
added by way of postscript : " I am bo
ashamed of the request I made in this
letter that I sent after the postman to
get it back, but the Bervant could not
overtake him.
