A friend hands us the following which npin?ireil in the Village llccurd, on November 1st, 1820: Accident has dis covered to a farmer a very simple mode of destroying Weevils In corn ware houses. Happening to Iny In thecorncr of a granary, In which there was a large quantity of corn, some sheep skins with the fleece on he was not a little surprised to And them, a few dnys after, covered with dead weevils. He repeated the ex periment several times and always with the same success. At last he ordered the corn to be stirred up and not a sin gle weevil remained in it. It appears therefore, although the cause has not yet been ascertained, that grensy wool when in the neighborhood of weevils attracts and destroys them. "Eating" Rules. Never eat when much fatigued ; wait until rested. Never eat Just before you expect to engage in any severe mental or physical exercise. Never eat while in a passion, or when under any great mental excitement, de pressing or elevating. Never eat just before taking a bath, or before retiring at night. Never eat before regular meals. Thou sands of persons have been prematurely laid in their graves simply from eating heartily when the system was not in a condition to properly digest and ap propriate the food. When the system requires food, and is in a condition to make good use of it, it will call for it in its legitimate way. Flat Irons. In damp weather fiat irons, unless kept on the stove, are apt to gather moisture, get rough, and sometimes rusty ; and it is not well to keep them hot all the time, for a good many reasons they are liable to get knocked off and broken, and after a while do not retain the heat as well, and they are in the way. If you occasionally rub the smooth surfaces with a bit of beeswax, and then rub on a piece of cloth, they will always keep bright and smooth. If they do ever happen to get wet, aud so rust, lay a little fine Bait upon a smooth board and rub them over it quickly while hot. ' For the last five years I have not lost a cucumber or melon vine or cab bage plant. Get a barrel with a few gallons of gas tar In it ; pour water on the tar, always have It ready when need ed and when the bugs appear give them a liberal drink of the tar water from the garden sprinkler, or otherwise, and if the rain washes it off and they return repeat the dose. It will also destroy the Colorado potato beetle, and frighten the old long potato bug worse than a thresh ing with a brush. Five years ago both kinds appeared on my late po tatoes, and I watered with the tar water. The next day all Colorados that had not been well protected from the sprinkling, were dead, and the others, though their uame was legion, were all gone, and I have never seen one of them on the farm since. I am aware that many will look upon this with indifference, because it is so cheap and simple a remedy. Such should always suffer both by their own and their neighbors' bugs as they fre quently do. Chicago Tribune. 6" At a farmers' meeting in Barre, Mass., a member asked " Why is it that one-third more seed is required now in planting grain than in former years before the threshing machine was invented?" Another thought that the germinating power of a large portion of the grain was destroyed by the " lightning speed of the cylinder;" of late years he has used the flail and the result had justified his conclusion. The suggestion was made that there might be other causes, perhaps of an insect origin. G3" Trees should be planted not only by the dwelling-houses and along roads, but they should be In every pasture and by watering-places, and near every barn wherever cattle, horses or sheep are to be provided for. All these animals suffer from our burning sun ; and to say noth ing of their comfort and enjoyment, the cost of shade trees will be many times paid back in the saving of milk, fat, fleece and strength, which will result by protecting domestic animals from the heat of the sun. Rural Standard. 83T To make Good Mead One gallon of water, one pound of loaf sugar, one half ounce of ginger, one lemon, sliced, take out the seeds, one teaspoon ful of yeast ; let It stand over night to ferment, then pour off without stirring ; add to each bottle one raisin ; cork tight.
