Smith, the Duncannon baker had an upset on Tuesday, and Miss Kate Hess wno was in the wagon was considerably bruised on the face. The Verdict of the jury in the Galla gher case, that was on trial before Judge Kowe, at Chambersburg, was in favor of Mrs. Gallagher. We get a Paris letter every week, but as yet none of them have been of sulll cient interest to warrant us in their publication. Wanted A supervisor who can put the road between this place and Newport, in such a condition that it is not a punishment to have to travel over it. Decoration day was not noticed in this place. We never could see why one day should be set apart for the mem ory of departed heroes, but think they should be remembered every day in the year. Harry Smith raised the frame work of bis large blacksmith and coach shop, on Wednesday last, and the building will soon be ready for occupation. It add much to the appearance of that cor ner. James B. Splese, a Harrlsburg lawyer, and formerly of Juniata county, has been convicted in the U. S. Court of charging more than the legal fee ( which is $25) for collecting a pension for an old woman whose husband was killed in the army. Sentence deferred. On Sunday night a week some flour was stolen from the mill of Jonas J. Smith in Juniata twp. On Monday he got a search warrant from Esq. Smith, of this place, for the purpose of search ing the house of another of the Smith family. Health Committee. The Town Council of this borough has appointed the fol lowing named gentlemen,a Health Com mittee : Dr. M. B. Strickler, Wm. Grler and W. II. Sponsler. The committee will enter upon their duties, Monday, June 11th. How to Borrow Money. "Can you give me a ten dollar bill for silver V" asked a miller last week of a citizen of this place. Mr. S. being glad to accommodate a per Bon whenever he can, consented. The bard money man counted out $5 In sil ver, and as he handed it over said, " there is $5 and when I come over next week I will bring you the balance." We consider that about the coolest way to borrow money that we ever heard of. A Singular Case. We learn from Dr. Geo. D. Carl that, on the night of Fri day last, Mrs. Hezekiah Berry, residing near Canebrake School house, gave birth to two still-born daughters that were joined together In one body commencing at the clavicles and ending at the bottom of the pelvic cavity, bringing the babes face to face, with their arms clasped around each other. Half an hour after ward, Mrs. Berry gave birth to a well formed and living boy baby. These cases have attracted the special attention of our medical men. Qrcencwttle Echo. A Horse Narrowly Escapes Drowning. John Peters' mare was turned out to pasture in Philip Peters' meadow on last Saturday evening. The Inclination of the animal being to break down fences and enter forbidden ground, she was hobbled to prevent her engaging In such mischief. The hobbling near ended the mare's existence, she falling into a run that runs-through the field, in which she was grazing, and the hobbles so encum bered her that she was unable to help herself. By a streak of good luck Mr. Peters happened that way, just in time to prevent the beast's life from ending, He procured a rail, placed it under her neck to prevent the water from Strang. ling her, and then with help, which came to hand, the animal was safely landed on terra firma. Newport Newt. Weather Report. U. Mclntire, Esq., hands us the following report of the weather for the month of May last : Average of Thermometer at H o'elock A. M., 64lJ l.V; of Barometer, 80 Inchos minus 5-tentlm. Average of greatest de gree of heat, l2- 4(1' ; of lowest degree of cold. 4J 60'. There fell 4 inches and (I tenths of rain. The warmest day was Saturday the 4th, the mercury running up to (Hi the coldest was Thursday the Hth. the Thermometer slnkiriK to 82. On night of the 12th, the Thermometer sank to within 8 degrees of the freezing point, being colder than any night In April, all the tender plants and the spring growth of the forest trees were frozen. . Reaping as He Sowed. The Ilev. C. L. Vance, M. D., referred to in the follow ing paragraph, taken from the Cham bersburg Record, will be remembered by many of our citizens to have ofl'ered his medical services to this community, as an Indian Physician, a few years since: " The Rev. C. L. Vunce, M. D., who four years since was sent from our courts to the Eastern penitentiary, under sen tence of seven years for an attempt to outrage a little girl, is dying of phthesis, nnd en n not long survive. Ills life is a singularly forcible illustration that the way of the transgressor is hard. The son of pious parents, with good natural powers of mind, supplemented with a university education, he passed trom a Baptist minister to the Methodist, left that and made a fortune as a quack doc tor, in Enst Tennessee, and while on a summer visit to Chambersburg, commit. ed the crime for which he is imprisoned. On entering prison, he declared himself an infidel, but now when earthly life is vanishing, he professes faith in God, and acknowledges his punishment as the reward of his sins. Truly there is something in the touch of death which causes the stout heart of infidelity to shudder and call for merry." Cumberland County. We copy the fol lowing from the Cumberland county papers of last week : Jacob Dunkle recently sold his farm of sixty acres a mile west of Carlisle for $9,000, or $150 per acre. Thomas McKee, an aged and highly esteemed citizen of Mifllin township, is lying quite ill, with no hopes of re covery. A bull belonging to Sam'l. Senseman, of Silver Spring twp., broke into the horse stable on Sunday and gored a val uable mare to death. Otterbeln Chapel, situate near New burg, on the State road, was broken open by some scalawags, one night last week, wh o helped themselves to some thirty yards of carpet. On last Friday Mr. Charles Hailing, living near Leesburg, was working about his horses, one of them kicked him on the left arm between the wrist and el bow, breaking the arm. A second attempt was made to Are the extensive paper mills of Hon. A. Wit mer, at Middlesex, on Monday night. Several bundles of paper were perfectly saturated with coal oil and a lighted can dle placed on top of them. The candle burned until within an inch of the oil and then went out, and thereby the well-planned job was frustrated. In the early part of Spring a newly married couple left Mlddlespring, this county, for Kansas. Arriving there penniless and homeless they soon be came disgusted with the country and started for Old Mother Cumberland, walking all the way a distance of six teen hundred miles. Echo. On Saturday last an accident happen ed near Stounerstown, resulting in the death of an interesting child of Lewis Stepler, a tenant on the farm of Samuel MehafFey. Workmen were employed in the construction of a stone fence, when a large rock in the hands of a colored man fell from his grasp, rolling down a bank and striking the child, which was at the foot of the hill, in the head. Death was the immediate result. On Wednesday a rather unaccounta ble incident happened under the notice of Adam Bentz of this place. He with a hand was breaking up an old ore wash er for the purpose of getting the old iron in an ore bank just beyond Big Spring on the turnpike. While hammering away to detach the Iron from the wood, the wood suddenly took fire and burned so fiercely that it was impossible to get it out not Having any water convenient. What is a mystery to the ordinary ob server can be explained In a scientific way. It is taught in chemistry that water confined with oxidized iron and the smallest amount of sulDburio acid. will produce hydrogen gas. The beam through which the Iron ran was water soaked, and when the iron was struck ignition took place and the gas being highly inflammable as a matter of course took fire and will explain the mysterl ous burning. Newville 'tar. Juniata County. We copy the follow ing from the Juniata county papers of last week. William Van Sweringen's store, at Bealetown, was robbed of between one and two hundred dollars' worth of store goods, on a night last week. We are Informed that at the raising of a Darn on Air. uamn watts' larm, in Fayette twp., on Friday last, a Mr. Bender was very seriously hurt, by be ing KnocKea on tne irame. On Tuesday of last week Mr. Ell Noon, of Turbett twp., while standing on a scaffold trimming trees, the ax slipped and struck him on the left wrist, inflicting a severe wound. It bled pro fusely and it was feared he would bleed to death before the flow of blood could be stopped. On Tuesday afternoon Benjamin Moore, attempted to board a freight train going west, which was traveling at a nveiy rate or speed, lie aid not succeed in getting aboard, but was tnrown violently to the ground, and in falling struck a car wheel, cutting an ugly gnsh in his head and another in his right hip, besides sustaining other injuries. . On Friday evening Inst. Mrs. Eliza beth llnmlln, mother of O. W. Hamlin, met with a painful accident. She went into the stable for some purpose, and while there tripped and full over a box fracturing her right arm at the wrist. Dr. Scale was summoned and adminis tered to her wants. Mrs. H. is getting along well, considering her advanced age. J'ort Jioyal Times. On Saturday night or Sunday night. May 25 or 20, 187B, the following articles were stolen from the Jewelry store of J.
