GOODRICH, publisher, Harrisburg, Penna. 11 1st Don't fall to say what paper you saw this lu. A Dutehman'a Opinion of Texas. John Struder, formerly of CIrclevllIe, has been to Texas. He bail the fever quite badly. Visions of perpetual sum-' mer, a land of fruits and flowers, of a' fertile soil, of " fair women and brave men" so filled his head that to Texas he must go, and he went. . This is the way' he tells the story to the editor of the1 Mlddletown Press. " I got some ticket to Galveston und sailed on der sehteamer for dot blaee. It costs so much my poard to get, dot ven I vos dere, my money vas all gone. Mine brudder, he llff up country und so I pawn my vatch mit a shop und buy some ticket for so far ash I could, und den I telegraph my brudder to meet me. He come dere und dake me mit him home. I schtay dere fehust 'two days, und den my brudder say, ' better you go back to New York. DIs is no country for a white man,' I dink so too, but how I vas go to New York ven my money vas gone. I try to get my pension, but no body vould give me any money on dat at first." "A man try to sell me a farm und say I could llff on it five years for not tlngs und after dat I shall pay five per cent. Interest und In ten years I shall pay $500. I ask him how It vas dot he sell it so cheap, und he say efery man votllffson dot blace die mit yellow fever, so I don't buy. After some time I get some money on my pension und I come up here, und I don't haf dot Texas: fever some more. De white women vas all so plack as my hat, de horses vos all mules, und I vos rather haf a leetle lot In dis cemetery as five hundred acres of. farm in dot Texas country." .A Collector's Stratagem. While collecting, not long since, Mr. Johnson had the following experience at u fine mansion on the west side : A little girl responded to the ringing of the door bell, and, In reply to Mr. Johnson's Inquiry as to whether her mother was at home, said : " Mamma says for me to tell you she ain't in to. day. She's gone out." " Ah ?" remarked the imperturbed cir culator, without moving a muscle of his countenance, " please go and ask her to tell you where she has gone." The Insufficiently trained girl raa through the hall toward a rear room, shouting: ' Mamma, he wants to know where you have gone to." A smothered exclamation and a blow, followed immediately by a child's shriek of terror, was heard, a door was after ward loudly slammed, and finally a very red faced woman, bearing 60 cents, ap peared on the scene and deposited the money in the collector's hands as a peace-olTerlng. tW The other day a father gently said, Don't Btuff victuals into your mouth that way, my son ; Oliver Crom well didn't eat after that fashion." The boy, after pondering for a while, re marked to himself, " And I don't be lieve Oliver Cromwell walloped his boy for finding a bottle of whiskey in the shed when he was hunting after a horse shoe, neither." C3-" What's the use of all this sacrifice of life, this bloody butchery of Turk and Russian ?" said a Philadelphia Quaker to a Cincinnati hog merchant.' " don't know," replied the latter mourn fully, " pork isn't rlz any, that I can see." Cy " I shall not go to the masquerade unless I'm asked," said a young man to his companion, as they were prom enading up Main street, Monday even ing. "I shall not unless I'm asked, either," she replied. He took the hint and Invited her on the spot. ffcir A little city miss, who was spend ing a few days with a farmer uncle, visited the barn, and while looking at the well-fed cows remarked, " Why, uncle, Just see I all the cows are chewing gum, arm't they ?" U2T " Ma, are we cannibals V" asked a little Eighth street girl of her mother the other morning. " Why my child, what do you mean V" " Nothing, only I heard you say to Bridget, 4 Boy legs for breakfast.' " . (S The will of Mr. Land, late of Kentucky, leaves all his property to his wife, and specifies that she can " marry again if she wants to." And yet people sing about a land that is .fairer than this. O A contemporary asks : Are American girls delicate V" It depends very much on whether you offer them . cotyanut cake and ice cream or a bar pf soap and a washboard. J
