The borough of Patterson will build a new school house this summer. Green Park has yot a singing school in progress. The Literary Society at Shernmnsilale closed some time ago, with a grand en tertainment. The Debating Club at Falling Springs, still continues to meet every Wednesday evening, in the Union school house. Horse thieves are operating In some parts of Adams county. County School Superintendent will be elected on the 7th of May. Our Senator from this district, Dr. Crawford, appears to be a good fisher. A few days ago he caught twenty line trout. One of the peculiarities of this borough is that when a couple of men are work ing there are generally from three to five lookers on. Three peddlers arrested In Carlisle Inst week, for selling goods through the county without license were fined $100 each. A little such medicine would do the peddlers good in this county. Mr. Austin Lane has greatly improv ed his house, (formerly the Moore prop erty,) on Main street, by newly weather boarding and adding a neat porch to the front. There will be a Murphy Temperance meeting in Mt. Gilead, on Tuesday evening the 30th inst. Speakers from New Bloomfield will be present, alBO the choir belonging to the New Bloomfield union. By a mis-calculation lu throwing a small piece of timber, on Wednesday afternoon last, Charles Fenntemaker, while at work in the cellar of the build ing to be erected for TnE Times, was hit along side of the head, the blow knocking him insensible and badly cut ting his left ear. Dr. Ard sewed up the cut and Charlie was at work again the next day. On Saturday morning the people of this community were startled by the an nouncement that Stewart Beaver was dead. On Wednesday evening he was seen upon our streets, apparently in the enjoyment of good health. On Thurs day evening he took his bed, and con tinued to grow worse until Saturday morning, when death relieved him of his sufferings. A post mortem examination, which was conducted by Drs. Sterrett, Graham and Shelley, revealed the fact that his death was occasioned by concrete matter forming around an orange seed, which had been swallowed by the deceased while In health. Port lioyal Times. Runaway. On Tuesday last, Mr. B. F. Leonard, of Rye twp., drove to Marys ville and hitched his horse at Leiby's store. A passing train scared the ani mal and caused him to break loose when he started for home at such a rapid rate, that the hind spring of the buggy was shook out. Mr. Valentine ran out to stop the horset when he turned into a small gate making a general smash up. He then ran against the pig pen which threw him square on to a fence on his wide when he was secured. The animal was not hurt but the buggy and harness were a total wreck. --4L- ----- Fire in iVillerstown. At an early hour on Wednesday morning a 'lire was dis 'jovered in the store 'room occupied by Mr. Thomas Cluck in that borough. When first seen the 'fire had obtained such headway that It -was impossible to extinguish it and the building and con tents were entirely consumed. The flames also extended to the house occu pied by Mrs. Jennings as a residence and the post office, which building was -also destroyed. The building recently completed, be longing to Mr. 'Wm. Everhart, which was built of brick, was saved by great exertion and the flames were prevented from extending to other buildings. The fire was first seen coming out the itellar window and it is supposed that it was the work of an incendiary. The loss on stock and buildings is estimated at about $18,000, on which there is a partial insurance. Mrs.' Cathcart who occupies a portion of 'the store building as a residence lost much of her furniture, on which there was no insurance. Mrs. Jennings' loss is about covered by an insurance in the Fire Insurance of Philadelphia. Mr. 'Cluck had an insurance of $8000,dlvlded among the JKtna, Fire of Philadelphia, the Britifcb, and the Lycoming. Fdund Dead. On Sunday morning a week, Mrs. Barbara Whltinore, residing near Shady Grove, Frank'.ln county, was found dead in her house, by her sons C. JI., and I. II. Whitmore. She had not been seen since Monday of last week, and was supposed to be absent in Harrlsburg, where she proposed to go on that day. Her son Henry living close to her, sup posed she had gone away from what she told him, and gave the matter no fur ther thought. But on Sunday morning her children, becoming alarmed at her supposed absence, went to her house to Bee If she had returned, and finding it locked up,concluded to force an entrance when they found her lifeless body lying near the stair-case, and where It is sup posed to have lain since the day she was Biipposed to have gone on a visit. A Coroner's Jury decided that she came to her death from natural causes. She was about 70 of years age. lieposilory. . . 4 Where Did They Come From. In the month of February of this year Albert Slieafl'er discovered a blouse, a pair of duck overalls, a linen shirt and a hand kerchief all tattered and torn from com ing in contact with passing drift wood, rubbish, &c. The articles were found lodged in a Abu basket that had been set in a small run that flows Into the Buffalo creek a short distance above Thomas Lenlg's, in Juniata township. A short distance above the basket two sucks con taining coffee were also found. Early last week or late In the week previous Michael Stutzman while hauling sand came across a pair of new boots, with the strings uncut, lying in the same stream where it empties into the Buffalo. Probably the goods were stolen and hid underneath the banks of the stream, or secreted in some spot in close proxim ity to the water, which during the freshet, washed them out to where they were discovered. But where they came from remains unsettled, no one having as yet been able to identify the goods. News. -. . A day In law Is twenty four hours and no regard is had for a fraction of a day. It was contended that the defendant was Ignorant of the law, but the court said such ignorance excused no one. Cumberland County. We copy the fol lowing from ; the Cumberland county papers of last week : This comnftunity was startled on Mon day by the' announcement that Capt. Samuel Megaw, of Mitflin township, had committed suicide by cutting his thioat. Capt. Megaw was well and favorahly knowu throughout this coun ty, having1 been one of the County Com missioners some years since. For sever al years past, we are informed, he has been in 'a melancholy state of mind, which will account for bis rash act. He "was always regarded as one of our best Citizens, and few men enjoyed the friend ship of those who knew him best, to a greater extent than did Capt. Megaw. , 'On Monday morning of last week, Dr. J. C.-Claudy, of Newvilie, (brother of Samuel lt. Claudy, of Carlisle), was ' thrown from his sulky by the breaking f an axle its he was turning the corner of an nlley nenrhls residence. The7n terprise says he clung to the lines and was dragged some distance, but succeed ed lu stopping the mare. He also was severely hurt, sustaining a sprain of the ankle Joint. On Sunday last, about 1! o'clock In the afternoon, the frame stable of Mr. Isaac Hykes, Hlilppenslmrg, was discovered to be in flames, and, before relief came, was burned to the ground. The building was fully insured. This is a clear case of in cendiarism, and Ib supposed to have been prompted by (he active part which Mr. Hykes has taken in the arrest and con viction of criminals of the town. Scarcely had Mr. H. gonetosleep, after witnessing the destruction of his stable, before some miscreant or miscreants en deavored to break into his store-room on North Railroad street. Fortunately, the barking of a dog awakened those living close by, and the bungling burglar was driven away. These transactions are all of a piece, and the officers of the law have so woven the web of circumstance around the criminals that it is scarcely possible for them to escape. Communicated. A Card.
