8 THE TIMES, NEW BL00MF1ELD, VA.. MAKCII 5, ,1878, Damage by the Tidal Wave nt Callao. AooountH from Callao, l'erti, of the effect of tho tlil ill wave there, any the oldest Inhabitants have never aeon any thing to compare with the soenes of Jnnnai'jr S7 and 28. The ea 1 covered with floating debris. At every moment Im mense waves of thirty and forty foot high break over the mole and along the whole const line, uploading destruction around. Most of the wooden structures Inside the mole, built for the use of the Pacific Steam Navigation Company, and for other purposes, have been swept away or broken up. 2000 tone of coal for the English Company has disappeared, and the merchandise on the dock baa been com pletely ruined. The wheat mole, the ('hucointo mole, the property of the Muelle Darseua, and Melggs' mole are destroyed. The various timber yards, coal deposits and bathing establishments have been greatly damaged. The railroad run ning from the dock to the Chuooiiito has been completely undermined. Eight persons were drowned. At Pisngna the condenser was broken to pieces and a ' con siderable quantity of coal and saltpetre lost. At Iqulque the earthquake shock was terrific It laeted one minute aud thirty eecouds. This main shock was followed during the night by forty minor shocks. Laud slides aie reported. At La Noria several bouses full. The steamer Karnak is reported lost. A Campaign Slander. When Dr. R. V. Fierce was a candidate for Bute Senator, his political opponent published a pretended analysis of hia popular medicines hoping thereby to pre judice the people against him. Ilia election by an overwhelming majority severely re buked his traducers, who sought to im peach his businoss Integrity. No tiotice would have been taken of these campaign lies were It not that some of his enemies (and every successful business man has his full quota of enviouB rivals) are republish ing these bogus analyses. Numerous aud most absorb formulas have been published, purporting to come from high authority ; and it is a significant fact that no two have been at all alike conclusively proving the dishonesty of their authois. Attempt to Wreck a Train. Bethlehem, Pa. Fob. 25. The watch bouse of the Lehigh Valley Railroad, a few miles east of this place, was broken into by unknown parties last night. The party, after demolishing the windows, placed three heavy sills ou the maiu track of the Lehigh Valley Road, evidently with the Intention of wrecking a traiu. Fortunately the obstruction was discovered and re moved in time to avoid an aocident. ThiB morning the railroad detectives ar rested Charles Weaver and Edward Dries back at FremanBburg, both of whom acknowledged their complicity in a plot to wreck trains. No motive is assigned for the act, beyond the fact that oue of them was put off a coal train recently, on which be wag stealing a ride, aud that the line was obstructed out of revonge. Indispensable! The Peruvian Syrup, which is now bo populiar, deserves its renown, because it has proved itself to be indispensable to all invalids. There is nothing like it to bring up the weakened powers of a man. The stomach, which is compared to the "cita del," is at once acted upon by it. Its powers are renewed, its work of digestion is promoted, and all the blessings resulting therefrom are supplied by its use. Food is assimilated to the system, and it, in turn, is strengthened to do its normal work. The business man whose energies have b'een run down by over close attention to busi ness ; the professional man suffering from the same cause ; the seeker after pleasure who has made too heavy drafts upon his stock of health, are all benefited by its use. In a word, the use of the Peruvian Syrup is recommended to all who feel the approach of lassitude and weakness from whatever cause. Every druggUt keeps it Rather Too Hasty. A good joke is told on one of the most distinguished members of the St. Louis Bar. A short time ago he was called upon to write the will of a lady of some means, residing at one of the public institutions of that city. lie wrote the document, and after having it regularly attested put it in his pocket and forgot all about it. A week or two afterwards he found the will in his pocket, and thinking the lady was dead took it to the Probate Court and bad it probated. 8ome of the heirs, residing in Illinois, bearing of the provisions of the will, came to the city for the purpose of contesting it, and found to their surprise that the lady was living and not likely to die very soon. The lawyer is now at work getting the probate of the will set aside. Another Man Served Right. West Brome, Quebec, February 25.
