What are eggs per doz. when 2 more for 12 ets. lowers the price 1 cent per dozen ? Some person rolled a barrel of whis key from a freighttrain when near Cove Station a few nights since. Mr. Daniel Bhatto of Perm twp., re cently captured a snapping turtle that weighed twenty-live pounds. Newport is putting in a claim for the new penitentiary to be located at that place. We think it a good suggestion. The last day of February was as pleas ant as a May day. The mercury for several hours was up to 62 degrees. High water last week compelled the rolling mill at Duncannon to suspend operations for ft-tlme. A son of Mr. J. B. Tola ml of Duncan non made a narrow escape from drown ing by falling in the river while playing a few days since. A photographic car has been over the I It. K. taking views of prominent places. At Newport they took a picture of the Messrs. Bechtel & Bon's tannery and of the Episcopal church. Some time ago a person, whose name is known, entered Mr. John Spahr's field near Duncannon, and carried otf a lot of corn fodder. Mr. Spahr would like him to fetch it back or pay for it and save further trouble. Record. A young chap living in Tyrone twp., was unfortunate enough to get his girl fast in the mud last week, near Eliotts burg, while taking her home, and the result was the loss of her over shoes. Bhe has a new pair now at his expense. We never growl about our neighbors taking our local items without credit, and in fact are so used to it that, we would not feel happy did they fail to make such use of us. But wheu they take an article so troublesome to ar range as the list of officers elected throughout the county ,common honesty would suggest the propriety of giving the proper credit. At Shelby, O., on the 18th ult,, Eliza beth Sutoh, formerly of this place, was found dead on Gamble Street, near the gate of Oakland cemetery. A jury was immediately summoned by H. W. Hildebrant, J. P., acting as coroner. After havingheard the evidence and examined the body, they found that the deceased'eame to her death by some form of heart disease ; the form to the jury unknown. Kansas Lands. While so many persons are turning their steps westward we think a few articles on the resources of Kansas will be acceptable. We therefore call attention to an article on that sub ject which will be found' on the 6th page. Old and Faithful Officers Watts town ship has had the same Constable for thirty-three years, and one Justice of the Peace that has, with the present term, served for forty years, and one School Director that has served in that capacity for twenty four years. Real Estate Changes. Several changes and sales of real estate were made in this borough last week. The house and lot owned by Mr. Thomas Butch, on Carlisle street was traded to Lewis Potter, Esq., for his interest in the Perry House property. Mr. Sutch will again occupy that hotel, and Mr. Potter will remove to his new house, having sold his property on Main street to F. Mortimer. Barned Burned. Shortly after" o'clock on Monday evening of last week a bright light was seen by the citizens of this borough, which many thought to be from a tire at Landisburg. It proved, however, to be the barn belonging to Mr. Joseph Lightner, in Bheaffer's Val ley, Tyrone township. The building and quite a quantity of hay and grain were destroyed. Previous to the fire all the cattle and colts were turned out of the building, showing that the fire was Intentional. Some arrests are talked of by the insurance company of that town ship, in which there was an insurance of $(100, but when our Informant wrote us there had been no arrests made. Mr. li. was on his way home from Carlisle wheu he saw the light, and by taking a horse from the team reached home be fore the fire was over. The Band Exhibition on Friday and Saturday night last was well attended by audiences who could hardly have failed to feel that they had got the worth of their money. The programme was good and all acted their allotted parts in an exceedingly creditable manner. We learn that it is proposed to select the best from the two programmes and give one performance at Duncannon before long. If that is done, we can assure the citi zens of that place that they will find it an entertainment worthy of their hearty support. Caught In a Man Trap. On Saturday evening shortly after seven o'clock.when it was very dark, Mr. J. W. Spangler, of York, in turning the corner of Car lisle and Main street, in this borough, turned too soon and thus walked into the cellar of the burnt building that has so long been allowed to remain without being guarded by any enclosure. Mr. S., although badly stunned by the fall, man aged to get back upon the sidewalk where he was found and helped to Wil liamson's hotel, where he was stopping. Medical aid was procured and his inju ries were attended to. lie had received several very severe cuts on the face, which, though painful wounds, are not dangerous, though they will probably cause marks that will ever remind him of his severe fall and narrow escape from more serious injury. It Is strange that the owner of the lot has not enclos ed it ere this, or failing to do so that the borough authorities did not cause it to be done. No doubt some person will have to pay damages now, and in addi tion will still have to bear the expense of putting the location into such condi tion that further accidents will be pre vented. Counterfeiters Arrested. At Lebanon recently John A. Miller, of Union twp., Lebanon county, was arrested while standing on the platform of the car at tached to the Lebanon and Tremont pas senger train and was taken by Chief Tice to the lockup on a charge of having attempted to pass counterfeit money at the City hotel last Friday. Directly af ter his arrest a large roll of counterfeit bills on the Hanover (York county) hank was picked up where he stood, the ac cused evidently having dropped the notes to screen his guilt. The Daily Times Bays : " There are quite a num ber of persons in this county under sus picion of having been guilty of shoving the' queer.'" Miller will have a hear ing to-day. The authorities of Tremont, Schuyl kill county, on the same morning arrested a man named William Nye, of Indiantown Gap, Lebanon county, for passing counterfeit money and lodg ed him in the Pottsville jail. Since his nrrest he has implicated another confed erate who furnished him the counterfeit money. The authorities will endeavor to arrest more. Patriot . February Weather. B. We copy the fol lowing from the Cumberland county papers of last week : Charley Braun, of Shippensburg, has been arrested for being implicated in the lteeder robbery in that borough. On Monday afternoon last a very pain ful accident occured to Robert Thomp son, colored, while engaged at work in excavating the well in the rear, of the Court House. A large wooden bucket was used in lifting the broken stone from the well, and when the men above were about reaching for the bucket, it slipped from the hook and struck Thompson ( who was at the bottem of the well) on the head, knocking him senseless. His fellow-workmen hurried ly made arrangements for getting the injured man from the well. Drs. Krlse and Zeigler were immediately summon ed, and dressed the unfortunate man's injuries. At first it was supposed the skull had been fractured, but such is not the case. A few minutes before C o'clock on Thursday morning of last week, the Court House bell sounded the tire ularm. The fire was found to be in the large three-story brick building ou the corner of Hanover and South streets, and occupied by Mr. William Bluir as a residence and grocery. The first Indica tion Mr. li. bad of. the fire was at 6i o'clock, when he awoke, and found the house rilled with smoke. Proceeding down stairs be found the store ixoim filled with fire and smoke. The alarm was given, and the fire department was not slow in responding. Until the steamers were ready for service the store room was kept closed tightly, so that the fire could get no draught. By this means the fire was confined ex clusively to the store room and cellar, and was soon extinguished by the heavy streams of water that were pouring into the room. The fire originated in a small drawer under the counter, in which were kept loose matches. Loss, $1,600; fully insured. Volunteer. Juniata County. We copy the follow ing from the Juniata county papers of last week. Last Thursday evening Mrs. John Jones, a colored woman, residing in Port Koyal, left her liame at 7 o'clock to fill an engagement at house work at Mrs.McCulloch's. About midnight a rail road track patrolman found the colored woman, dead. in a sitting posture, against the wall of the road bridge which cros ses the railroad at the lower road crossing in Port ltoyal. It is conjectured that she missed the bridge in the dark, walk ed over the abutment and was killed by the full. She was not killed outright by the full, for by the appearance of the track she had dragged her body to where It wns found. A serious trouble between a man named Vaun and two Wilson brothers took place a few nights ago a Waterford, this county, during the holding of an exhibition at the village just mention ed. Some Bort of a feud has been in existence between the parties for some time. The men met outside of the building while the exhibition was in progress. Vaun was knocked down by a club in the hands of the brothers, and while he lay on the ground, was shot at. A bullet from a pistol knocked olF a middle finger at the hand joint, and an ugly bullet wound was also made iu his cheek, but the bullet so struck his face that it glanced off instead of entering his head.
