Fire 1 On Friday night at twenty minutes to ten the citizens of this borough were startled by the alarm of fire, w hen it was ascertained that the coach and wagon shop of Mr. Samuel Smith was in llanies. Within a minute after the alarm the blaze broke out of the upper windows, showing that the whole interior was on fire. Uy hard work most of the tools and the vehicles on the lower floor were Bafcly removed, hut all the materials and the carriages and sleighs, some of them being finish ed that were on the second floor were destroyed. The fire communicated to Mr. Smith's stable in the rear of the shop, and that and its centents, except the horse was also destroyed. The stable belonging to Mr. Harllng, which adjoined the property of Mr. Smith, was pulled down to prevent further extension of the flames In that direction. This precaution and the stillness of the night and the snow on the roofB enabled the citizens to save all other surrounding property. The total loss is about $2,G00,on which there is an insurance of $2,100, as fol ows : On the stock and materials in the shop, $1,050, in the Heading and in the Farmers' of York, $750 on the build ings, and $300 on tho contents of the stable. In what manner the fire originatedis not known, but It is supped to have been caused by the Btove in the painting room. Mr. Smith will rebuild as soon as possible, and the mean time has pro vided a place where his business will be carried on as usual. Scared Off. Last Sunday night Mr. John Potter, of Buffalo township, was wakened from his slumber by an unusu al noise about his horse stable. Think ing that all was not right there he aroused his two sons J. S. A. and Wesley W., who proceeded to the barn and discovered the lower door of the horse stable open, It being fastened with a hook, a lock on the upper one securing both from coming open from natural causes. The men pushed the open door to without further concern, taking it for granted that the horses had kicked it open, a circumstance that not uu fre quently occurs. The next morning what was their surplse but to rind the door hooked, while a horse stood in his stall bridled and saddled, ready for marching. Mr. Potter thinks that the thief entered the barn some time during the day, several incidents surrounding the circumstance, together with the fact that the barn was carefully locked In the evening, justifying the opinion, and that the brothers' appearance, just in the niche of time to save their horse, scared the theiving rascals a way. iVw. An accident of a shocking nature occurred at Tlppett's boilers works, south Harrisburg, about three o'clock yesterday afternoon which resulted in one of the workmen named William Murphy, being maimed for life. Murphy Is a boiler maker by oc cupation, aged about thirty yetrs, and has been working "off and oiJ' at the works for some time. Yesterday, at the hour above designated, while Murphy and another mechanic, Ed. H. Heller, were about to tighten a belt which had hern thrown from the pulley for that purpose, and were standing on a plat form about twelve feet above the ground Heller engaged In lacing the belt and Murphy holding it up with his right hand by some unaccountable occur rence Murphy's coat sleeve caught in the shafting while the powerful engine was making about 250 revolutions per minute, and before he could extricate his arm he was carried upward against the pulley, where he braced himself with a powerful effort with his left hand and actually Btood the fearful strain un til his right arm was wound up in the belting and torn off about half way be tween the elbow and shoulder. The un fortunate man then dropped to the floor, his fellow workmen gathering around him as soon as pdssible to render assist ance. The engine was then Btopped and the mangled arm removed. Had not the unfortunate mechanic (who is a strong, muscular man) braced himself with a deathlike "purchase" he would most likely have been carried among the machinery and horribly mangled. He was assisted to walk to Dr. Free's ofllce, opposite the works, where, after the bleeding stump was bound up, he was placed upon a street car and taken to the hospital. Dr. DuNott, assisted by the faculty, made a clean amputation of the arm about an hour after the acci dent occurred, cutting off the ragged stump about three Inches below the shoulder. Murphy is married and has a wife and two children residing in one of Mr. Tlppett's tenant houses on In dian alley, south Harrisburg. He was doing well as could be expected under the circumstances at nine o'clock last evening. HarrMnirg Patriot. Dunoannon Items. A correspondent from Duncannon sends the following : The works at this place are now run ning only on half time.
