A Good (leason.
At the renting of the pewslu a Chicago
church the other evening, there wa a
hot competition for No. 78, and bids ran
up to a large sum. It wan finally knock,
ed down to Brother H. " Why were
you bo anxious to get that particular
BeatV he was asked by Brother C.
" Why, because It's Just next Brother
M.'b" he replied. " Why," replied Bro
ther B. " M.'b as bald as a jug, and he
draws flics from everybody around hlni.
I made up my mind to get a pew near
him this year, for If there's anything 1
hnte It's to be pestered with flies when
I'm when I'm listening to a good
sermon. "
CsT " There, my lnd," said an Athen
ian once to a little Hebrew boy, by way
of joke, " here Is a pruth ( a small coin
of less value than a farthing), bring me
something for it, of which I may eat
enough, leave some for my host, and
carry some to my family." The witty
boy went and brought him some salt.
" Bait," exclaimed the Athenian, "I
did not tell thee to bring salt." " Nay,"
replied the boy, archly, " didst thou not
say, " bring mo of what I may eat,
leave, and take some home?" Verily
of this thou mayest eat, leave some be
hind, and still have plenty to carry
home." tWA gentleman having boasted that
it was easy enough to " do" railway
companies out of their fares, and that he
bad passed from one station to another
of a certain road the day before without
a ticket, was approached by on officer
of the road, who wanted to know how
it was done. The gentleman agreed to
tell for a " consideration." It was paid,
and then tuj ofllcer said : " Now tell
me how you did it." " I walked," quiet
ly replied the gentleman.
W A brother of Bishop Clark was
one of the wittiest men alive. It runs
in the family. lie once went to see one
of his parishioners, a lady with a pro
digious family, which bad recently been
increased. As he rose to leave, the lady
stopped him with "but you have not
seen my last baby." " No," he quickly
replied, " and I never expect to." Then
he fled. .
ifST " When a girl gets mad and rises
from a fellow's knee," Bays an exchange,
but thinks better of It and goes back
again, that's what they call a relapse."
And here we have been working for
dear life to keep off a relapse, under the
Impression that it was someway related
to cholera morbus. '
" Nothing," remarked a teacher
of botany, the other day, "Nothing will
come up when the ground is . frozen."
If the teacher will Just try to put the
crupper on a bay mule when It is feeling
a little dyspeptic, he will discover there
are two things which come up like rock
ets without any regard to the weather.
3r " Children," said the teacher, ad
dressing the infant class, " Children, do
you know you were all born in sin 1"'
" Please sir," interrupted a little one,
"I wasn't: I was born in Carlisle."
" Well, that's the same thing," said the
teacher, impatiently " Don't interrupt
me any more."
CiT Samuel Btickney, of Iowa, clasped
his best loved girl in an embrace bo
close that his revolver was discharged,
and a small boy standing near was
seriously wounded. The lesson of this
melancholy episode Is that boys shouldn't
be standing around at such times.
CF It is when a dry goods clerk of
ninety-four pounds weight attempts . to
help from a farm wagon a farmer's wife
of 2U3 pounds weight, that the reporter
seats himself contentedly on the curb
stone aud waits for the catastrophe.;
-y" What, going to leave us, James V
"Yes, sir; I'm very sorry, sir, but I
really can't put up with the missus any
longer." "Ah, James 1 but think how
long I've put up with her."
(ST " Kyes right 1" shouted a military
officer , to his compny. " Well.V
grumbled a green private, "nobody
said you was'ut right."
(ST Seeing is not always believing,
either. There are many men you can
see well enough, but you wouldn't like
to believe them.
