8 Seniors win Merit Scholar commendations
by Carole Gibason
Eight seniors at Donegal
have been named Commen-
ded students in the Merit
Program by the National
Merit Scholarship Corpora-
tion (NMSC).
The Guidance Dept.
announced that the follow-
ing students received
Letters of Commendation:
Jean K. Bixler, Jeffrey M.
Boulton, James W. Byrd,
Steve D. Hassinger, Joseph
A. Meszaros, Kevin 8.
Milligan, Melody A.
Mumma, and Kenneth A.
Wolgemuth.
These students are among
the 35,000 Commended
students named nation-wide
on the basis of their high
performance on the 1974
Preliminary Scholastic Apti-
tude Test/National Merit
Scholarship Qualifyimg Test
(PSAT/NMSQT). Commen-
ded students represent less
than 2 percent of those who
are expected to graduate in
1976. Although Commen-
ded students ranked high on
the PSAT/NMSQT, they do
not continue in the Merit
Scholarship competition be-
cause their scores were just
below the 15,000 Semifin-
alists publicly announced by
the NMSC in September.
The high standing of
Commended students in the
Merit Program shows -théir
great promise. Their
attainment in this nation-
wide competition deserves
public recognition.
To increase their oppor-
tunities for college, NMSC
reports the Commended
students’ names to the
regionally accredited U.S.

% 5 It seems like school just started;
It seems like summer still;
But nine weeks went by quickly,
With homework, tests, and ills.
Now it’s time for thinking
Of all the grades you made.
You shy away from knowing,
But they can’t go or fade,
Because we get report cards
Only too soon enough
As a member of the
Donegal Dramatics Club,
she has written numerous
plays for high school assem-
blies. One of these entitled
‘Keep the Faith’ won for
her a top Freedoms Found-
ation Award, an encased
George Washington Honor
Medal, which was presented
at the 26th annual Freedoms
Foundation national awards
ceremony at Valley Forge in
February of this year.
During the past summer,
Jane was one of eight
students from the Inter-
mediate Unit #13 selected to
attend the Governor's
School for the Arts at Buck-
nell University.

pated in a ‘‘Showcase of
Talent’ presented at the
