Pam Wivell, a Donegal High School sophomore, spent four months in Brazil visiting her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ranch. While on the South, American continent she attended the American School of Recefi and stayed at the unit house where her relatives are administrators of a govern- ment-sponsored project. While a guest of her sister, Pam traveled inland visiting 16 to 20 couples who are volunteers with the above plan. Mrs. Clyde Wivell joined 19 Americans in Miami airport and flew to South America on a church-spon- sored tour. Mrs. Wivell met officials, ministers and leaders of rural and urban communities in Chile. The group visited in all types of homes where owners were affiliated with a church. The tourists were housed in a 16th century monastary where they slept on straw matresses. In Chile they were rocked in their beds by a horizontal earthquake. A horizontal eruption is con- sidered not as damaging as a vertical one. ‘““An emotional experi- ence’, according to Mrs. Wivell, was an Umbanda Spiritualistic Service where S00 followers classsify vic- tims as to their evil spirits. Rituals are performed to cast out the evil in this new movement. The participants are charged a fee for transferring evils to ‘‘work- ers’. A Lutheran Church Wo- men’s Seminar, fishing vil- lages and a boat trip were also highlights of the jour- ney. Mrs. Wivell, terminated her tour in Recefi, Brazil where she was met by members of her family and saw her grandson for the first time.
