March 19, 1976 David H. Eby and collection 94 years in this area by Hazel Baker David Hostetter Eby, has lived his 94 years within a five mile radius. Born in Salunga, he was reared along the Big Chiques Creek (which he never saw flood- ed to the extent of the ‘72 disaster), and moved near Nissley’s Mill, in East Done- gal Township at the age of 24 when he was married. His wife, the former Katie Nissley, died in 1958, after the family had moved to Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, where Mr. Eby still resides with his daugh- ters Ruth and Anna Mae. The father of five daugh- ters, farmed for 41 years with the aid of hired help and after retiring to Mount Joy, he remembers picking 2,000 bushels of apples in one season. The nonagen- arian also recalls helping to plant 18 acres of corn by hand in 1896. The five daughters of David Eby include three teachers and two nurses. Ruth and Anna Mae taught in Donegal District, while Vivian Denlinger taught as a missionary to Africa for 18 years. Elizabeth Hot- tenstein, another daughter, and Mildred Guigan, both living near Lancaster, were the nurses of the family. Near the turn of the cen- tury, Mr. Eby, after observ- ing the tenant farmer on his father’s farm mount birds, decided he would give it a try. His collection numbers 40 stuffed birds which are native to the area although some are now quite rare. He has assembled over 400 arrowheads which he re- trieved while walking be- hind a horse and plow. He predicts there are still many Indian artifacts to be found, but they were easier to spot while walking when tilling the earth. Five deer were shot by our subject in his lifetime, and four of them were mounted and are hang- ing in his home. He re- calls the names of the birds without hesitation. The lone survivor of a family of a twin brother and a sister, two half-brothers and two half-sisters, at- tributes his longevity to good health. He had one broken leg in his life time which sometimes gives him a small problem; however, he is as alert as any person half his age. The retired farmer spends a lot of his time watching sports contests on television. Until two years ago he dug his garden each year. He at- tends the Mount Joy Men- nonite Church. A botany enthusiast, Mr. Eby taught his daughters to love wild flowers by travel- ing throughout neighboring counties to observe various varieties. He has traveled quite extensively within America and recalls in the early part of the century that he installed a telephone line between his brother’s farm and his own. Soon this expanded to the home of his in-laws and then to 20 neighboring farms, who formed a company with Mr. Eby serving as lineman. The company was bought by Bell Telephone Company. He was one of the first persons to purchase an auto- mobile in the area, and found the drivers of horse and buggy’s reluctant to share the roads with the new invention.
