Donegal School District’:
Diversified Occupations
Program has completed its
first full year of operation
very successfully. This pro-
gram is operated and spon-
sored through Lanc. County
Area Vo-Tech Schools.
Diversified Occupations
is an extension of a student’s
vocational education that
combines classroom instruc-
tion in employability skills
with half day work experi-
ence in a student’s chosen
field. After a student is
placed on the job, they are
supervised by Joe Sciortino,
Donegal’s Diversified Occu-
pations Coordinator. Mr.

4 DHS STUDENTS IN
COUNTY BAND
Four students from Done-
gal High School will parti-
cipate in a County Band
concert Sunday, March 16,
at 3 p.m. at Garden Spot
High School, New Holland.
Kevin Earhart, Kevin
Milligan, Holly Baker and
Steve Hassinger, members
of the marching, concert
and stage bands, will attend
the session.
Sciortino visits the student
on the job and confers with
the employer as to his pro-
gress, etc.
This school year there are
21 students attending classes
half days and working in
various occupational areas
the other half. “This pro-
gram gives a graduating sen-
ior a head start in obtaining
full-time employment in the
field of his choice,” explains
Mr. Sciortino. ‘By training
during his high school educa-
tion and during summers
with an employer, that em-
ployer most likely will hire
that student full-time upon
graduation.” Why? The
students employability is in-
creased tenfold over that of
other applicants because this
student has worked possibly
up to 2 years for that em-
ployer before graduation.
During this time he has
been trained in the total
operation of that occupa-
tional field, learning the

way duties are to be per-
formed and freeing the em-
ployer of the orientation
process of hiring a new full-
time employee. In other
words, an employer can fit
and mold a student into the
workings of his business,
before he is hired as a full-
time employee.
If an employer is inter-
ested in the program he
may contact Mr. Sciortino
at the high school (653-

tion.
