Page 8 - Mount Joy Bulletin June 19, 1974 National-Standard Holds Annual Employee Picnic National-Standard Co. held its annual picnic for employees’ and families on Saturday, June 15 at the Mount Joy Legion Picnic grounds. Farm Women 8 Hold Birthday Theme Meeting Farm Women’s Society No. 8 met in the Marietta Church of Christ Saturday, June 15. The meeting was opened by Mrs. Lewis Bixler, vice- president. She led the group in the singing of serveral songs and Mrs. Charles Shank accompanied at the piano. Mrs. J. Harold Frey was in charge of devotions and read an appropiate poem and scripture. A birth- day theme was carried vut in various ways because several of the hostesses had birthdays in June. Twenty four members and three visitors were present and responded to roll call by expressing individual choices as to the type of party - they enjoyed best. Secretary Miss Mary Grace Martin read the minutes and Mrs. Sylvester Shuman gave the treasurer’s report. Mrs. Harold Frey of the sunshine committee reported receiving verbal thanks from Mrs. Ada Greider to members who sent cards to her lately. Mrs. William Heisey, of the ways and means commtitee asked for suggestions for future trips. Twenty eight persons visited Hickory Farms on June 10. Mrs. Lewis Bixler gave highlights of her trip to Michigan, Dearborn and Detroit. The Ford plant, museum, Z00 and Meadowbrook Hill were of interest. Several games were played and special birthday decorations, previously made the hostesses and refreshments, created a pleasant atmosphere. Hostesses were Mrs. Lillian Eby, Mrs. Agnes Houseal, Mrs. Alice Myers and Mrs. Ann Shank. Co-Chairmen of the banquet arrangements were Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Getty and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hackert. Music was provided by the “Midnight Express.”’ Performing for the children were Joseph Smiley and Co., magician, and Sammy Ross, a novelty act. Prizes were won by Donald Gibble, Carmen Bradley, Joseph Borelli, Robert Eichler and Richard Miller. Those boys who have displayed a capacity for leadership are par- ticularly desired. Allis not work and study at Boys State. Each afternoon special periods are set aside for recreational activities. Among the sports played are basketball, baseball, foot- ball, volley ball, swimming and soccer. All boys are encouraged to participate. A band is organized during the period of Boys State. Sunday, June 30, is designated ‘‘Legion Day’. A special program is con- ducted for parents, friends, Legionnaires and members of sponsoring organizations. Byers indicated that there will be no exterior remodeling of the old cotton mill but that office space and other interior - although minor - renovations will be made to fit the firm's special needs. The cotton mill, owned by the Brown family and operated as a textile mill until 1950, in recent years has been used principally as a warehouse by various local firms. Last manufacturing operation there was about 20 years ago when Jamesway occupied the site.
