Mitchell Albert Briefs Rotarians About Plans For Fellowship Mount Joy Rotarians were given a “briefing” Tuesday noon, Aug. 7 by Mitchell Albert, who has been awarded a year’s fellowship to study at the University of Capetown, Capetown, South Africa. The award, made by Rotary International for between $4,000 and $5,000, will cover expenses to follow graduate level studies in the field of mineral economics. A Donegal high school graduate, class of 1967, he at- tended Cleveland State University for his undergraduate work in geology. Presently he is studying for the master’s degree in mineral economics at Penn State University. He and his wife, Kathy, will leave in mid-September for Europe, taking their car with them, beginning what Albert termed ‘“‘an adventure in lear- ning’. They will tour Europe and then ferry to Africa from Spain. Displaying a map, he showed how they will then cross northern Africa, return to Italy and Greece and then back to Egypt. Then will begin a long trek the entire length of the Dark Con- tinent to Capetown, which is at the fartherest point south, where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet. He explained not only where he will be going, but talked about what he hopes to do and to ac- complish. What mineral resources are available -- a rather indefinite estimate at this point -- and how they are used for the benefit of the underdeveloped nations of that part of the world are highly important, economically, he said. Albert is the son of Mrs. Vera Albert, New Haven street, and the late George Albert. Rodney D. Arndt With Rescue Ship " Navy Quartermaster Third Class Rodney D. Arndt, son of Mr. and Mrs. William S. Arndt of 720 Wood St., participated in search and rescue operations in the Gulf of Aden as crewmember of the destroyer, USS Jonas Ingram. While operating with the U.S. Middle East Force June 25, 1973, the Ingram received a distress call from the Indian merchant- passenger ship Saudi. After relaying this call through U.S. Navy channels in the Middle East, she proceeded at full speed to the last reported position of the stricken vessel. Together with the Israeli merchantman Leora, the two ships initiated a search. Soon the Ingram began sighting and recovering survivors and bodies from the choppy water. A total of 54 survivors and 6 bodies were brought aboard Ingram for transfer to a Somalian hospital. This is the second young man from the Mount Joy community in as many years to be granted a year’s study abroad by Rotary International through the efforts of the local Rotary club. Richard Heisey has been studying mathematics at Warwick University in England.
