Forest Fire Crew Holds Training Class On June 25, 28 and July 1, the E- town, Mount Joy Forest Fire Crew held a map and compass reading course for all members and auxiliary who wished to participate. The course consisted of two indoor theory classes, June 25 and June 28, and one out-door practical use session, on July 1. The class was instructed by one of the crew’s assistant wardens, -Richard E. Dickason, who in- structed similar classes while in the United States Marine Corps. ‘The course started with getting rid of delusions that most people have in finding directions and also why most people get lost. The course then progressed to map and compass reading in- cluding a brief history of the map and compass, orientating the map and compass, locating their position on the map and mapping their directions of travel. Also included in the course were several emergency methods for finding direction, such as using the sun, the stars, and in an extreme emergency, using a watch as a compass. Future field trips into wilderness area are being planned for those who completed the course. Plans also are being made for future courses for those who were unable to attend the first course, and for those who have joined the crew after the course started. A future field course, which is being slated in the near future, is a trip to Berks county to locate Mountain Mary’s grave. Mountain Mary spent most of her adult life on a mountain top in Berks county. SEA DISASTER ; On Sept. 8, 1934, the liner Morro Castle burned off Asbury Park, N.J.
