The Mount Joy Bulletin this week is inaugurating a new column—a column of reviews of books that we feel may be of interest to Bulletin readers. The column will be written by Mrs. Martha Rainbolt Epler, for- merly of Mount Joy, a graduate of Donegal High School and a former teacher of third grade at Grandview elementary school. She is the wife of the Rev. Wesley G. Epler, also formerly of Mount Joy, now pastor of Trinity and Emanuel United Methodist churches at Indiantown Gap, Pa. Welcome to the staff, Martha! The first book to be reviewed is ‘‘A Hat on the Hall Table” or “A Rollicking Romp through the Rectory,” by Jean Reynolds Davis and published by Harper and Row in 1967. By Martha Epler We must admit that before we read this book, we were prejudiced (in favor) of the author’s handiwork. Jean Reynolds Davis is a favorite author of ours. She, like us, is a minister’s wife, and has found great joy in the life of the parish. She shares this joy through her humorous and light-hearted works. “A Hat on the Hall Table” is our favorite, though! In it she gives an account of her entry into parish life, an unintended one, at that! This entry seemed mighty grim indeed when the new minister and his wife first stepped into their new home together, the parish rectory. It proved to be a nightmare of a house, an old Victorian relic consisting of four stories of grey stone covered with garlands of dying ivy. However, the minister and his wife soon brought love and life into the old mansion with their own zest for life and the addition of two small toddlers with precious antics of their own. The book is filled with char- ming and humorous anecdotes of parish life, but we will here briefly mention only two, perhaps our own favorites. They describe the two most holy days of the Christian calendar, Christmas and Easter, but are given an entirely new and unique slant through the eyes of Mrs. Davis, a busy, harried, and frustrated (but happy) minister’s wife. Easter morning dawned sunny and lovely at the Davis home, but the spell was broken when a phone call was received bearing the bad news that the organist would not be able to play the morning service. Would the minister’s wife please play for the service in her place? At that late hour, there was no time to debate the issue, even though the minister’s wife was trained only in the technique of the piapo! The situation became worse when, at the last moment, the organ failed to start and the altar boy fainted! But, by some miracle of Easter morning, the service did not turn into a complete shambles. The account of this Easter morning service truly warms the heart of the reader. A Christmas account is found in the book’s final chapter. What Christmas would be complete without a lovely white snowfall? However, in this case, the snowfall proved to be a disaster, stalling and immobilizing all well-planned preparations for the Christmas Eve service! The reader is puzzled about the disappearance of the Baby Jesus doll from the creche scene at the front of the church. One’s sen- timent is drawn to the different persons coming into the rectory on Christmas Eve, all different in needs, but all so similar in their humanness. The ending to the chapter and to the book is quietly sentimental and fitting. The reader, however, is sorry to put the book down, and will be drawn to other works by Mrs. Davis. We would be amiss if we did not mention the illustrations by Artist Susan Perl. They are marvelously comical in them- selves and add great appeal to the book. “A Hat on the Hall Table” would be interesting not only to minister’s wives but to all women—and men as well!
