FRUIT DRINKS - —— CWNENNENNERERNER AEE Deer Season The outlook for Pennsyl- vania’s 1972 deer season is quite good for the hunters, the Game Commission has an- nounced, From a biological or game management point of view, the prospect is not quite as good as a year ago, because the herd of whitetails again is growing almost dangerously large, which means there will be additional wear and tear on an already-overbrowsed range and smaller-bodied deer because of local food shortage. Overall, the range is well stocked with whitetails, with local and isolated exceptions, and the Game Commission anticipates that hunters will tag more deer in 1972 than the 104,227 they reported bag- ging in 1971. Reports from field officers indicate that deer are being sighted in large numbers throughout most of the state, Winter deer mortality was exceptionally light during ’71- 72 and 1970-71, again with OUR OWN HOME MADE ICE CREAM ay Looks Good local exceptions, and almost inconsequential when com- pared with losses during the 1969-70 winter, considered a “disaster” by some sportsmen. Actually, Weather Service records show that the winter of 1969-70 was almost a “nor- mal” winter. It seemed to be severe because winters before and since have been quite mild. Winter deer losses dur- ing 1969-70 were rather ‘“nor- mal” as well, considering the size of the herd and shortage of food. Following the 1967-70 win- ter, heavy pressure was put on the Game Commission by local hunting groups, deman- ding that antlerless deer sea- sons be closed for periods of three to five years. Wildlife managers pointed out that to do so would have resulted in an uncontrollable population explosion. Herbert Hoover, 31st pres- ident was born on Aug. 10, 1847. nn E. & S.
