PAGE 6 LLL wm, e Deaths DR. JOHN S. GATES Dr. John S. Gates, 64, a Mount Joy physician since 1935, died Saturday, Sept. 11, at his residence in Long Point, Md. He was stricken by a heart attack in mid-af- ternoon and died at his home. He had been in ill health since 1968 and had limited his practice. Dr. Gates was well known as an avid foot- ball fan and had co-founded the midget football program in the Donegal area. Born in Lebanon, he was the husband of Elma Roeh- mer Gates and a son of the late Charles Rupert and Car- rie Stoever Gates. Dr. Gates began his gener- al practice in Mount Joy on Nov. 1, 1935. His Mount Joy address for home and of- fice was 75 E. Main St. He also had a residence in Long Point. He was graduated from Lebanon high school in 1924 and received a B.S. degree and the Strohm Science Prize from Franklin and Marshall college in 1930. He was grad- uated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medi- cine in 1934 and intereand at the Harrisburg hospital. Dr. Gates entered the mili- tary service in May, 1941, as a first lieutenant and was dis- charged in February, 1946, as a Lt. Colonel. He served as chief medical officer of the U.S. Armed Forces Induction Station, Baltimore, Md.; post surgeon at the New Cumber- land Army Depot, and chief medical officer at Fort Meade Personnel Center. He also was with the U. S. Public Health Service as a Lt. Commander, until 1949, He was an active member of the Lancaster General hos pital Staff until 1968; was medical director of Donegal high school’s athletic pro gram and was the former health and safety chairman for the Western District, Lan- caster County Council, Boy Scouts of America. Dr. Gates was a member of the Lutheran faith and as a Republican, served one term on the Mount Joy borough council. He was a member of Post 185, American Legion, Mount Joy; life member of Friend- ship Fire Co. No. 1, Mt. Joy; Lancaster City and County Medical Society; Pennsylvan- ia Medical Society; American Medical Assn; BPOE Lodge 631. Lebanon; Lincoln Repub- lican Club, Lebanon; Upper Chesapeake Watershed Assn.; Cecil County SPCA, and Hacks Point Volunteer Fire Co. Besides his wife, he is sur- vived by two sons, John Ed- ward, New Castle, Del., and Services were held from Charles Rupert, II, at home. the Heilig funeral home Wed- nesday at 2 p.m. and burial was made in the Mount Leb- anon cemetery, Lebanon. BERTHA DEMMY Mrs, Bertha Demmy, 82, wife of Howard H. Demmy, Maytown, died Monday, Sep tember 13, at 53 am. at the home of her son and daugh- ter-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Paul L. Demmy, 544 S. 13th St. Columbia. She had been in ill health several weeks, Mr. and Mrs. Demmy ob- served their 60th wedding anniversary on July 13. Born in Maytown, a daugh- ter of the late Samuel and Fannie Stoner Lindemuth, she was a member of the Maytown Church of God, where she was a former Sun- day School teacher; the Ever Ready Sunday School Class; Golden Age Club of Maytown and the Ladies Auxiliary to the Maytown Fire Company. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, THE BULLETIN, MOUNT JOY, PA. Paul L., Columbia; and El- wood L., Marietta; five grand- children; five greatgrand- children; three sisters, Mrs. Stella Lease, Marietta R, 1; Mary, wife of Charles Hous- eal; and Elizabeth, wife of Mervin S. Arnold, both of Maytown; two brothers, Roy Lindemuth, Mount Joy; and Jacob Lindemuth, Elizabeth- town; also a number of neic- es and nephews. Services were arranged for Thursday afternoon from the M. Hawthorn Miller funeral home, Bainbridge, followed by burial in the East Donegal Township cemetery. GEORGE E. RUTH Geirge E. Ruth, 47, of 6260 Jackson Drive, East Peters- burg, died Sunday morning, Sept. 12, in the Lancaster General hospital after an ill- ness of two days. The husband of Darlene Nauman Ruth, he was born in Hopeland, Clay Twp.,, a son of Enos E. and Elva Eckman Ruth, of Lexington. A resident of East Peters- burg for the past nine years, he was employed as a welder by the Lanco Feedmobile Inc., Lititz, He was a member of Trin- ity United Church of Christ, East Petersburg, and was a veteran of World War II, having served in Germany & France with the U. S. Army Besides his wife and par- ents, he is survived by two daughters, JoAnn and Diane E., and one son, Gary Lee, all at home; and two sisters, Helen, wife of Clarence Sch- webel, Stevens R1, and Esth- er, wife of Mahlon Bear, of Brickerville, Services were arranged for Thursday, Sept. 16, from the East Petersburg Trinity Unit- ed Church of Christ with burial in the Henry Eberle cemetery, Mount Joy. Golfers Play Fourth Meet The fourth Lancaster Coun- ty Farm Diner Jack Frost golf tournament was held during intermittent showers, at Cool Creek Country Club, Sunday, Sept. 12. Sixiy-six members of the Mount Joy Golf Assoc. took part in best ball of foursome, full handicap tournament sponsored by James-Mummau proprietor of the Diner. The three-some of Pat Mec- Kain, Bob Flick and Paul Sload, came in with the low score of 57 to win first prize, The fourth member of their foursome was unable to play.
