Sqr., Elizabethtown PHONE 367-1185 Patronize Our Advertisers / Over The Back Fence By Max Smith THE TWO current prob- lems with this year’s corn crop indicate that we might be heading for additional ob- stacles when we grow corn on the same ground for a number of years. The leaf blights and the root worm seem to be on many farms and the condition may get worse. Growers are urged to evaluate all measures to pre- vent the infections next year so that corn will continue to be the major grain crop. At this time of the year winter barley is being planted and this small grain is the very best substitute for corn in most livestock and dairy ra- tions. Some growers may want to increase the acreage of barley this fall due to the corn situation and the great need for more straw. THE USE of lime is strongly recommended at this time of the year when small grain land is being prepared. On many grain fieldS either alfal- fa or clover is to be seeded into the ground next spring or summer. Growers should give lime sufficient time to make the soil more alkaline; to apply it only a tew weeks before the legumes are to be seeded is not recommended. As the small grain fieid is being workd this fall, the lime should be worked down into the top 6 to 8 inches of topsoil. This will allow sever- al months for the lime to work before the legumes are seeded. A complete soil test will determine the amount of lime and fertilzer that is needed. THE MONTH of September is a good time for the proper- ty owner to improve his land- scape. Lime and fertilizer may be applied to the lawn and new sezsdings of grass may be made with good chances of success. Evergreen shrubs such as yews, junipers and Japanese holly may be planted before cold weather arrives. Shade trees such as oaks and maples should not be planted until they are dor- mant which would be late November or December. At- tention to the lawn at this time of the vear will help get a better turf for next year. Shrubs planted this fall and kept watered until the ground freezes will be off to a better start than to wait until next spring to trans- plant. ALL DAIRYMEN are remin- ded that acorns are very hard on the milk flow of dairy and beef cows. Any pastures that have oak trees should not be used by the milking herd this fall. Some experiences have been very bad in which cows ate the acorns and the am- ount of milk was reduced more than half the former a- mount and the cow could not be Jbrought back to normal production until the next lac- tation. Cows will nourish the acorns if they get started to eat them in spite of having good forage grasses in the area Young stock may be al- lowed in THE BULLETIN, MOUNT JOY, PA. Our examination was made in accordance with the requirements of the School Laws of Pennsylvania, and with instructions provided for conducting the audit, and accordingly included such tests of the accounting rec- ords and such other auditing procedures as we considered necessary in the circumstances. As required by Section 2431 of the Public School Code of 1949, as amended, a report of the audit was filed August 31, 1970 in the office of the Prothonotary of the Court of Common Pleas of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and the sald report will be confirmed absolutely unless appeal is taken therefrom within thirty days after the filing thereof. In our opinion, the balance sheets and related state- ments of revenues, expenditures, and fund equities as pre- sented below present fairly the financial position of each of the several funds of DONEGAL SCHOOL DISTRICT on June 30, 1970, and the results of their operation for the year then ended, in conformity with the principles and procedures legally established for Pennsylvania school systems, ; GENERAL FUND BALANCE SHEET June 30, 1970 ASSETS: Cashydn Banle......0 v0 visi saves $ 229234 Investment... .... oni rae an 179 Delinquent taxes receivable ............... 35,070 Inventory of material and supplies ......... 7,600 TOTAL ASSETS/FUND EQUITIES $ 27203: GENERAL FUND STATEMENT OF REVENUES AND EXPENDITURES Year ended June 30, 1970 CASH IN BANK—July 1, 1969 RVENUE: Local sources Sfate sources .................. 1,312,153 Federal sources 48,704 Refunds of prior years expenditures 570 TOTAL REVENUE 105,024 be dean Tl $1,119,709 2,481,136 TOTAL NET RESOURCES .... $2,586,160 EXPENDITURES: Administration ...............; $ 107,688 Instraction .......... ......... 1.358.606 Attendance services ............ 36.700 Health services ................ 32,675 Pupil transportation ........... 75,738 Operation and maintenance of plant ........... 20.0. .5 224.970 Fixed charges ............-... 125,736 Food Services... .............. 11.650 Student activities .............A 10,220 Community services ............ 4 822 Capital outlay ................ 17,000 Pebt service ................... 312,100 Intersystem payments .......... 39.215 TOTAL EXPENDITURES $2.357.120 Net in¢rease in assets ........ 60 TOTAL NET OBLIGATIONS 2.357.130 CASH IN BANK—June 30. 1970 $ 228,980 OTHER INFORMATION LIABILITIES & DEBTS—payable in future years Bonds—last maturity date 7173 ........... $ 3,000 Authority rentals—Ilast maturity date 1215 91 6,339,600 $ 6.382.600 ive trouble or toxicity fron: GENERAL FIXED ASSETS il a the acorns. b Land and land improvements .............. $ 231000 en Buildings vo. o..0s i 5,559,713 George Washington was |] Furniture and equipment ................. 983.976 once unsuccessful at growing alfalfa in the Eastern soil! -_—— former FUNDS The cheetah can speed of 71 m.p.h. 20-year-old alfalfa root can actually attain a length of 50 feet!
