THREE-GAME SERIES FRIDAY WITH CHAMBERSBURG ¥ x Mount Joy’s raging Legion baseball team moved another notch up the ladder this week winning the City - County championship playoff series from Millersville. Victory came at the very last chance—in the ninth in- ning of the third game. Don Musser, with two outs, whammed a double to score Denny Brown, who had walk- ed, and give Mount Joy a 5 * * to 4 win. Next, the Mount Joy club hosts Chambersburg Friday at 5 p.m. on the Donegal base- ball field in the first of a best-of-three series for the Le- gion District 10 championship. In the first of the City- County affair, played Satur- day at McCashey, Millersville —the city champs measured Mount Joy — county champs 9 to 7, rapping Bill Grove for * * 10 hits. The second game, at Done- gal field, went to Mount Joy, 9-6, Bruce Sutter and Tom Derr, sharing the pitching. The latter was the winner al- though the former had four hits and five RBI's to play a big part in evening the series and sending Mount Joy into the final game. Monday, at Lafayette field, the ball team which is made up in great part by the Done- * * gal high school club which won the county championship this past spring, even the count at 4 -4 in the fifth with three runs. Musser banged a two-run single in the inning. Three innings of goose eggs followed before Mount Joy pulled off the winning run. Derr, Sutter and Grove all were on the mound Monday, the latter taking the win with seven innings of work. They gave up only four hits. The Susquehanna League All-Stars have entered the Eli- zabethtown Invitational Base- ball Tournament. All games will be played during the first two weeks of August and the All-Stars will meet teams from Elizabethtown, Hershey East Dauphin, and Middle- town. Six candi- dates were selected by the playground children, and then the children voted again for two out of the six candidates. ‘The senior candidates were— Donna Walker & John Thom- as; Intermediate candidates were Bonnie Baker and John Hayman Jacquie Jo and John were the beginner candidates; They were all given flowers, and the King and Queen were each presented with a crown and a banner he x ES Marietta Throughout the past week, events centered mainly a- round hiking and camping Tuesday, all the boys went on a “Commando Hike” along the Marietta river trail For this hike the boys tried to cover a certain distance in a certain amount of time. They managed to do it, however, without going over a 2 hour limit. Wednesday, the play- playground went on a hike. They left about 11:30 a. m. and had lunch along the way. At one point they all stopped by Chiques creek to watch six boys nut on a swimming exhibition. These boys would swing on ropes across the creek as well as jump off tree limbs into the water. The children all enjoyed watching this especially when one of the supervisors, William Reu- ter, decided to join them by taking his turn at swinging across the creek on the rope. Thursday afternoon the chil- dren had ‘square dancing” whereby they learned what the different terms meant and how to follow them according to a record. That night there was a sleep-out for the boys and girls beginning at 8 p.m. There was more talking and laughing than sleeping. but everyone had a grand time. Friday was ‘hippie day.” The children did a beautiful job of dressing like hippies as well as preaching the words love and peace all afternoon. This week we will try to run as many games and con- tests as possible. Some of these will include a bike ro- deo, a pass, punt & Kick con- test, a checker tournament, a pie eating contest, a bingo party, and a hobby show. On Thursday evening there will be various awards given to the children. That will be the last event for this summer. We sincerely hope the chil- dren had a good time this summer and will come back again next summer. *® * * Arts and Crafts The week of August 3 to 7 will feature string designs for juniors. Participating members of the New York team were: Kim Houseal, Jay Long, Phil Hou- seal, Robert Lauver Jr., Steve Gibble, Walter Shifflett, Ran- dy Houseal, David Crankshaw Bob Blake, Sue Boyd, Karen Henry, Judy Miller, Karen Al- bright, Alice Musser and Ka- thy Shelly. The events in the Olympics were. 100 yd. dash, standing broad jump, 220 yd. dash, softball throw, 1 mile run, javelin throw, 440 yard relay, 2 mile run, 880 yard relay, 220 backward run, 340 yord run, frisgee throw, 14 mi. walk, hammer throw and 1 mile relay. “Ring Day’ was Thursday COUNTY ALL-STARS BRILL AT DONEGAL Professional football play- ers have been on strike! But, Lancaster county high school all-stars are hard at work! And, we repeat, HARD at work! They are drilling for the Wednesday, August 15, all- star game between the “East” and the “West”, to be played at Lancaster Catholic high school. The squads for both teams are working daily at Donegal high school, getting them- selves in condition, brushing up on the game and learning to work together as individ- ual stars in a team effort. Nearly 60 boys are drilling. The “West” team is coach- ed and drilled by Al Brooks. Donegal’s mentor, while the “East” is under the eye and hand of Ephrata's Claude Lunch. Mrs. Mylan also helped to chaperone those go- ing. For the intermediate and senior boys there was an ov- ernight hike to Castle Park on the farm of Lloyd Fuhr- man. Eleven boys went and a good time was had until the rain came. On Friday there was a Hob- by Show and prizes went to the following people: Most un- usual - puzzles by Jay Long; Most educational - Pennants by Bob Blake and Postcards by Mary Kanoff. Most inter- esting - Stamps by David Crankshaw. A doll show, shuffleboard tournament, bike hike for ag- es 10 and over, a picnic, and Awards Night are among the activities planned for this week. GENERATION-GAP MEETING The youth class of St. Johns Lutheran church, Maytown, will sponsor a ‘‘generation gap’ program Saturday even- ing, Aug. 8 at 7.30 p.m. at the Legion pavilion in Maytown.
