When in neec o: printing remember The Bulletin. Patronize Our Advertisers ® Editorial (From page 1) Some men should retire at 60. For some, it is a shame to turn them out to retire- ment at 70. Individuals are different. But, until some better measurement is found, the age rule stands. Why the 21 year limit for voting? Because, those who cast ballots need to be of an age of judgment that recognizes the magnitude of the privil- ege. Eighteen year olds simp- ly have not, generally speak- ing, the judgment. They have not dived long enough, seen enough of life and have not experienced enough of the nitty-gritty realties of life to fit them to cast a re- sponsible ballot. We are told how smart the present generation of youngsters has become—how much more they know than their fathers and mothers, at the same age. True, youngsters are well schooled, They know more b'ology, physics, anatomy, economics, physio- logy, aerology, botany and psychology, They have their heads full of knowledge. But, it's a fact that their fathers and grandfathers at 18 probably were better based in judgment and bet- chemistry, ter funded in reality than the 1969 youngster. Grandfathers of the pres- ent generation of youngsters well may have been schoo! teachers at age 18. They had been rubbed savagely into the economic dirt of surviv- al. Which, is another way of saying that 18 now is too young for mature judgment needed to become a voter. Actually, boys and girls become adult when they strike out on their own, be- come responsible for them- selves and earn their own bread and butter. A dependent child is not a mature child despite the fact he can quote learned theories, figure problems in higher math, understand the movements of the stars, the workings of .a gasoline en- gine and talk knowledgeably THE BULLETIN MOUNT JOY. PA. about apoggees and perigees. Judgment comes from ex- perience, not knowledge! Teenagers 95 percent of them, we are told are mighty fine people. They stay out of trouble, stay in school and are working and plan- ning to be responsible citiz- PAGE SEVEN ens. And, for that we are thankful. But, until those boys and girls have reached a higher plateau of judgment, we be- lieve that 21 is a better age at which te begin casting a ballot. Call lim Chuck is an electric home heating special- ist. He has worked with literally hundreds of customers in preparing estimates of the cost of replacing old-fashioned heating systems with electric heat. For most cus- tomers, the estimate was far less than they had expected. And, even more satisfying, they’ve found that operating costs match- ed the estimates. Add to this the greater + convenience, comfort and cleanliness of - a flameless electric heat and you can under- stand why more and more people are switching to it.
