The fact that people should be interested in who the candidates are and what they say is no guarantee that they will make much effort to learn. ® @® ® Crowds will turn out to see a man named Kennedy or McCarthy, but it takes a special kind of drum beating to stir people on a lower level of political activity. ® © o A few years ago there was a rather successful local “meet the candidates” pro- gram, held in the fire hall and a goodly number of peo- ple turned out. S. 50 in Southern Indiana, between Coluinbus' and Bedford, we realized suddenly that we were going up a hill that in our childhood was known far and wide because it was so rough and steep that cars had trouble making the grade. It was not uncommon for all the passengers to get out of the car at the bottom of the “Medora Hill” and walk to the top, to make it easier for the car to ascend. Usually, one or two people carried a big rock, to ‘chock’ the back wheels in case the car stalled! But not today!
