For with the money situation in the school district being what it is, some good solid questions are being asked a- bout this new elementary school building. ® © © The district is in a finan- cial pinch. All in all, it is not a pretty picture. ® ©o ® Where the new elementary school is concerned, it seems to be a matter of weighing the cost of a new building in 3 1968 against the costs of re- H. S. Coupled with the repairs is the knowledge that new con- struction costs are certainly going to be greater every year the building program is delayed. ® oo o But, nevertheless the question is being asked on the eve of what is a n al- most certain increase in school taxes. The question, apparently, is not one of whether or not there will be an increase but rather of how much the increase will be. ® ® Oo Mount Joy has a new pav- ed street this week. It is Terrace avenue in the Florin ward in the Bernhard sub- division. Several homes al- ready have been built on the recently-opened street. ® Of This 'n That (From page I And now it is the first of May—a very special time. The lilacs are in full bloom; so are the pink and white dogwoods. The tulips and azaleas are masses of color everywhere: and the flower- ing crabs and fruit trees are still lovely. Against the vivid green of the grass and the new leaves on the trees, it is all just like a fairy- land! Japonica adds its bit here and there, and the “pinks” are not to be over- looked. Surely there could be no place more beautiful than - Lancaster County in the springtime! Elsewhere in The Bulletin this week is a letter from Miss Edna Martin, former PA Mount _ Joy schoolteacher, thanking friends for remem- bering her on her 87th birthday April 13. We think it is interesting that the local people who sponsored the “card shower” made a big burlap bag with “Happy Birthday” on it, and sent it to the postmaster at Holtwood. They asked him to please hold all letters for Miss Martin that looked as if they were birthday cards and put them into the bur- lap bag, to be delivered on Saturday, her birthday. It seems he did just that, and the mailman took the bag to Miss Martin’s door full of 350 greeting cards! No wonder it was an ‘“‘over- whelming experience” for her. and April March ‘have brought many: things to Mount Joy: the delightful junior class play, “Life With Father,” at Donegal high school; the Donegal chorus’ thrilling presentation of the musical: ‘Carnival’; the im- pressive services surround- ing the chuches’ observance of - the Lenten season and Easter; stunned sadness at the death of Martin Luther King; daylight saving time; and the tragic passing of one of the outstanding young men of our commu- nity. And now, May and June lie just ahead. It’s “Clean Up” time; and the big Me- morial Day observance in Mount Joy is just around’ the corner. Grass will need its weekly cutting, gardens will be plowed, flowers and vegetables planted, and be- fore we know it, the sum- mer vacation will be here! Time speeds by almost too quickly, don’t you think? The new owners have re- ceived permission from the federal authorities to operate an air taxi service to all points in the U. S. In charge as general man- ager will be Conrad ‘Skeet’ Nieman, who will offer char- ter service and flight instruc- tion. Presently he is living in Pottstown but he will be moving to Manheim soon. The company also plans to build a new 10-unit building with individual “T” shaped hangers. They will also offer minor repair service and an increased fuel service with both 80 and 100 Octane gaso- line. D.H.S.
