Derr, 231 South Delta street, veteran truck driver, will complete his 49th year of driving a truck on Oct. 16 of this year. Now driving for the New Standard Corp., he started Oct. 16, 1919, for the old Independent Oil Co. of Mount Joy. He started driving a 2-cyl- inder auto car for the oii company, with solid tires, gas lights, no side curtains, He had to crank his truck to start it; there were no snow plows in those days and he had to open his own roads to get through and into the farmers’ lanes to serve them with kerosene or gaso- line. He drove solid tires for 13 years. “Charlie” has traveled over three million miles. He has had one slight accident in all that time, in Wayne, Pa., on July 17, 1948, when he slid into the back of a doctor's parked car.
