With- drawal from high school oc- curs chiefly at ages 16 and 17, when school is no longer compulsory and may seem unattractive. But unemploy- ment isn’t so attractive eith- er, and it is three times high- er among those who have leit school prematurely than a- mong those who stay on to graduation. Not everybody is in love with regular academic educa- tion. Schools are beginning to think more carefully than ev- er about ways to interest non-verbal young people and to teach them skills they will be able to market later, es- pecially in technical fields with a future. While educa- tors are the chief ones with a vested interest in the drop- out problem, all of us have to club together to support the unemployed. So all of us ought to club together to make staying in school until graduation the fashionable thing to do. —Selected If a husband asks for an extra spoon for serving his wax beans he is rebuked for adding needlessly to house- hold kitchen drudgery. @® Last Fruifs (From page 9) 1.
