SOLVES RUST PROBLEM Modern science has an an- swer to the iron rust in wa- ter supply problem. Henry Wooding, Penn State exten- sion agricultural engineer, says that plastic nipe is a good replacement for badly corroded or rusty metal pipe, and it can be installed rather easily. “It is absolutely essential, therefore, to have a car's bat- tery checked thoroughly at frequent intervals. If it does not retain a full charge, a new one should be installed. Checking of the ignition sys- tem, and the use of high de- tergency light Winter oils, also are advisable steps for all seeking trouble-free Win- ter driving.” The national economy for efficient operation needs both production and distribution. Advertising is the cheapest means of obtaining maximum distribution. Patronize our Advertisers. Free Estimates MANOR ROOFING CO., Inc. In Winter The prime causes behind hard-to-start car engines in cold weather are extra heavy demands on the battery and ignition system, according to Keystone Automobile Club Automobile engines require more cranking power in cold weather than they do in the warm, but receive far less, points out Samuel T. Millik- en, the Club’s Field and Ser- vice Manager. “The colder it is, the more power is needed” he contin- ued, “as ordinary oil films get stickier and heavier and the bearings and other parts becoming harder to move. About a third more power is needed to crank the engine at 20 degrees Fahrenheit than at 40 degrees, and more than twice the power is necessary at zero degrees. Then, too, low temperatures increase a battery’s internal resistance, reducing the available bat- tery power.~At 20 degrees, therefore, the available bat- tery energy is about 80 per cent of that in reverse at 40 degrees. While at zero, only 50 per cent of battery is av- ailable. “Increase in internal bat- tery resistance also reduces the voltage which provides ignition. If the voltage drops below the minimum of 3 volts there probably will be no spark and, consequently, no start.
