1,230 Die At
Grade Crossings
Grade crossing accidents de-
creased slightly last year, but
some 1,230 persons still died
in such railroad accidents
during 1962, reports Key-
stone Automobile Club.
That figure virtually was
identical with the three-year
1959-1961 average of 1,223
grade crossing deaths result-
ing from collisions of motor
vehicles and trains. In one-
fourth of the daytime acci-

dents and in more than half
of the nighttime accidents,
the motor vehicles ran into
the trains.
“Motorists who ignored
the warning lights, bells or
other signals were only play-
ing Russian Roulette with
themselves and their passen-
gers,” said Edward P. Cur-
ran, the Club’s Safety Direct-
tor. “These devices were put
up for the sole purpose of
| protecting the motorist and
pedestrian, and to
their warnings was
dy.”
The KAC official contin-
ued: “There are other bad
driving habits to be avoided
at railroad grade crossings,
including the failure to look
both ways, traveling too fast
to stop on the right side of
the safety line, and overdriv-
ing the car’s headlights, with
the result that
crossing is not seen in time.
“Stop, look and listen

these points also: come to a

BOTH ways at all times;
obey all grade crossing sig-
nals, particularly in fog and
other conditions causing poor
visibility, stop completely
and check the crossing before
