Why FFA Week is Observed During February National FFA Week comes every vear during the week of the anni- versary of the birthday of George Washington. Although usually con- sidered first as a great general, our first president, and an engineer, Georg ge Washi Ington’s first love was the farm he called Mount Vernon. There he was one of the first in the nation to practice contour planting, p rotations, and other soil conserving methods. Probably no other man in America of his day spent more time seeking new agricultural information, pondence wit either by experimentation on his own farm, or by* corres- h agricultural scientists in England. The title of America’s first “scientific farmer” might be applied to Washington. It was more than a centur: v after his death that many of the sound agricultural prac- itces he advocated found general practice. It is out of deep respect and admiration for General Washington, the farmer in whose progressive ways they seek to follow, that Future Farm- ers annually observe their National FFA Week at the time of his birth- day Best Route to a Successful Future REGULAR SAVINGS WE INVITE OUR YOUNG FARM NEIGHBORS (THEIR PARENTS ALSO) First MOUNT JOY TO OPEN AND BUILD SAVING ACCOUNTS AT National Bank & Trust Company FLORIN TODAY, TOMORROW AND ALWAYS ... There's a Big Job ahead for these boys in AGRICULTURE because agriculture is a science, a business profession, and industry. Agriculture provides more jobs and careers in the city than on the farm .. . more jobs and careers than any other industry. To hit their mark of success in any line of work, these boys sight their target and aim carefully — but agriculture offers Today. about 40 per cent of all jobs are in agriculture — jobs important to everyone — jobs with futures — jobs with rich financial rewards . .. and because there are these jobs, young men like those pictured above are preparing themselves diligently and adequately through the future farmers program in connection with the Voc.-Ag. Department of the local school. They'll be ready for the “Future that can be theirs in Agriculture.” If you wonder about the scope of the FFA movement — ponder these figures for a moment: FFA has 380.000 active mem- bers in 9000 local chapters located in farming areas throughout the fifty states, and Puerto Rico.
