their
week of Jan. 11-16 the
Commission will again
an outstanding wildlife exhibit
on the lower concourse of the
Farm Show Arena. The central
theme of this exciting, educa-
turkey. On either side of the
centered feature cage will be
shown ringneck pheasants and
quail, some of them day-old
' chicks, as well as Canada geese
| and live hawks and owls.
| At one end of the exhibit a
| large wildcat will snarl defiance
| at onlookers; at the other end
beavers will cut and feed on as-
| pen poles between swims in a
pool provided in their spacious
pen.
All the birds and animals will
be displayed in natural surroun-
dings artistically contrived.
Each cage will be flanked by
appropriate dioramas —authen-
tic, illuminated miniature re-
productions of three dimensiens
- showing members of the
grouse family, furbearers, song-
birds and other wild life species
in native habitat.

Cooperating with the Game
Commission, a Smethport bird
dog owner reported flushing 4
of these imported birds while
hunting ruffed grouse last No-
vember in the McKean County
release area. Two December
deer hunters reported seeing 1
sharptail in the same area.
The most encouraging news
came from a Ridgway resident
who is a neighbor of Stanley E.
Forbes, wildlife bioligist in
charge of the sharptail grouse
project. The man reported see-
ing a flock of 20 to 25 sharptails
within one-half ‘mile of the Elk
County release site while hunt-
ing deer last Dec. 1. This large
number would indicate that
some young birds were produc-
ed in the hatching season of '53.
Although these reports are
considered encouraging, the
Commission’s research division
will continue a close study of
sharptail grouse this winter and
during the nesting season next
spring, to determine what pro-
gress the bords are making. It
is hoped that these western
grouse may populate the many
large openings in the forests
created by repeated fires and
severe browsing by deer. Such
areas have little value for native
