Two December deer hunters reported seeing 1 sharptail in the same area. The most encouraging news came from a Ridgway resident who is a neighbor of Stanley E. Forbes, wildlife bioligist in charge of the sharptail grouse project. The man reported see- ing a flock of 20 to 25 sharptails within one-half ‘mile of the Elk County release site while hunt- ing deer last Dec. 1. This large number would indicate that some young birds were produc- ed in the hatching season of '53. Although these reports are considered encouraging, the Commission’s research division will continue a close study of sharptail grouse this winter and during the nesting season next spring, to determine what pro- gress the bords are making. It is hoped that these western grouse may populate the many large openings in the forests created by repeated fires and severe browsing by deer.
