They are not so brittle as the feathers from land birds, and the oil in the feathers helps to preserve the keeping qualities. KILL THE RATS—The cost of keeping a rat has gone up from $2 to about $5 a year. Ed- gar Udine, extension entomo- logist of the Pennsylvania State College, says you don’t have to pay this bill unless you want to do so. Get detailed information from your county agent on how to kill rats with red squill or warfarin. TAKE SOIL INVENTORY — \ good way to take an invent- ory of the soil is to get a soil sample mailing kit from the county agent’s office, one for cach field or portion of field on which information 1s wanted. Take ti sample according to airections and mail to Penn. State's soil testing laboratory. A report will be returned. USE WOODEN POSTS-—Far- mers will use wooden and fewer steel fence of steel shortages this fall. more posts because Wal- ter W. Simonds, Penn State ex- ension forester, says that posts with more heartwood will last longer than posts having a lot of sapwood. CARE FOR EVERGREENS— Winter is the critical time for newly planted evergreens on the home grounds, says A. C. Rasmussen, Penn State exten- sion ornamental horticulturist. Apply a 4-inch mulch of well- rotted hardwood sa oak leaves, or peat around plants. SAVE FINGERS Don't let corn-picking time turn into fin- ger-picking time, warns Penn State extension agricultural en- gineers.
