Peter Missionary from Odessa, Russia spoke in the Church of God at| Landisville, last evening. Rev. Varonoff stated that 1930 to 1941 all religious worship | was forbidden in Russia. The chur- | ches were closed, and Sunday, Res- | urrection Day in the Russian lang- | uage, was just another working | day. But, he states from 1941 when | the terrors of war were being brought to the Russian people, they demanded to be allowed to go to church and worship. The govern- ment consented, and the churches were opened. Millions of people flocked to the churches, and are still doing so. On the first day of worship, Jos- eph Stalin came to the largest church in Moscow and stood for an hour during the service, mere- ly to enhance his popularity. Rev. Varonoff compares Stalin's act with that of the Devil in a story in the Bible where the Devil came to church. Rev. Varonoff says that the Rus- sian people were seekers of God and that Christians in Russia out- Varonoff, Russian from numbered the Communists. The Greek Orthodox faith alone has 35,000,000 members, while the Communists in Russia number on- ly 3,000,000. The speaker also pointed out | that in Moscow, a city of 8 million,| The Bulletin, there are only 30 churches, - and that on Sundays as many as three separate services are held to igive as many as possible an opportuni- | ty to worship. Stereopticon views of | the city, and of other scenes of in- | terest in Russia, were exhibited | by the missionary. Rev. Varonoff, who has spent most | of his life in Russia, and whose | parents are missionaries there, says that Communism has three | elements: denial of God and the suppression of religion; abolition | of private ownership of property; | and hatred of the rich. “Commun- | ism”, power based upon force and limited by nothing” Some believe, he says, that some day Lenin, the God of the Godless, | will return to life. wt, conn ll QA ——— MAY HOP, FRIDAY, MAY 4 IN HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM The coronation of the May Queen will take place at the May Hop, Friday, May 4th at the high school auditorium.
