on our fire siren. It was stated that
same had been repaired.
Treasurer Nissley reported these

Supervisor Smeltzer inquired if he
should haul ashes on the Park
grounds on North Market street.
This was left in the hands of the
Street committee.
It was reported that a hydrant at
one of the former Detwiler proper-
ties on Manheim road, recently ac-
quired by the boro, was left run all
winter to keep it from freezing.
A number of water rebates asked
for, were upon motion granted.

74. There was one 68, one 67, one
66 and one 64. This list does not in-
clude the deaths of residents of the
town who died beyond its borders.
124 cases were quarantined in Mt.
Joy during 1934: 67 chickenpox, 21
measles, 18 scarlet fever, 17 whoop-
ing cough and one mumps.
There were 36 births in the town
last year: 18 boys and 18 girls. Some
Mount Joy births occurred at Lan-
caster hospitals, but we have no re-
cord of them.

Statistics from the electric industry
show that it is more heavily taxed than
any comparable business. Regulatory
measures under which it operates be-
come more drastic each year. The re-
sult, it would appear, is that the gov-
ernment is prompting the utilities to
refrain from doing a lot of things which
would contribute materially in speed-
ing up recovery.
Careful management, planning for
the future, improving operating con-
ditions, and increasing the consump-
tion of electricity, have always figured
in bringing about rate reductions for
the benefit of the consumers. Confront-
ed with the rising flood of taxation,
the utilities are having a hard time
keeping their heads above the financial
waters.
