Simple and inexpensive clothes, made at home by the amateur dress- maker, not only reduce the cost of milady's wardrobe, but afford a satis faction known to every woman—hav- ing something made the way it is wanted. The problem of limiting expense and at the same time having charming clothes is one which almost every woman faces at one time This problem may be solved success fully by adopting the plan of thrifty housekeeper and working on a budget. Hit-or-miss spending is as disastrous in dress as it is in any branch of household expenditure or in business. One way of being well dressed at all times, observes a fashion writer in the New York Tribune, is that of sup- plementing the expensive models which one must buy with a few simple clothes made at home. It is well to take a lesson from the French women, and if one cannot have a great many beautiful clothes get a few that are zood, wear them constantly and then get new ones. In this way it is pos- sible to be much more fashionably dressed than by having a large num her of nondescript suits, frocks and hats. Organdle Frock of Slender Outline. Dotted swiss was selected for one model because it is popular with wom- en all over the country and makes a comfortable and practical dress. This dress is worked out in black, dotted with white. Interest is added by white linen ribbon embroidered with black dots, which is used for a sash and to bind the neck of the frock. The scallops are embroidered in white. An organdie dress robbed of its flufliness may not appeal to the flap- per, but it dees appeal to almost every who has the flapper Dresses of the crisper muslins have a much greater appeal woman passed Stage. would were they more clinging in outline. A | fluffy organdie dress carries no ap- peal except to those who are exceed- ingly slender. A straightline frock of dark red or gandie has sleeves and sash of white organdie ornamented with crisp little flowers made of red and white mus lins. Patchwork Pockets From Vivid Silks Ways of embellishing clothes and adding to simple frocks touches that hring them into an entirely new realm are as important as are the clothes themselves; oftentimes they are more 80. A great many women like little or no trimming on their clothes; others enjoy touches of color, ribbons and laces. This Is more or less a matter of taste, and it would be making rath- er a strong statement to say that one is good taste and the other bad. Things of this sort depend largely on individual temperament. There is no reason why a woman should not have any kind of trimming she likes, especially in these days when so many Dress of Beige Kasha, Having Pock- ets and Collar of Old-Fashioned Patchwork, Qutlined With Embroid. ery Stitch. are so rich ils are offered and all suggestion. Jecause one woman izes her clothes plain and of severe implicity is no reason why another should sacrifice her individuality by opying her neighbor. Another very attractive and simply- made frock is of beige cloth, A trimming of buttons is tie outside of the sleeve and down the de of the skirt, but the note of rel used on novelty lies in the collar and pockets old-fashioned wnatchwork: that is mm— 0) UI —————— Lettuce is shipped from California the year round, according to the Unit- ed States Department of Agriculture. A lovely flower-trimmed little frock was shown In a pale yellow georgette, trimmed with artificial bachelor but tons in a darker yellow, sewed around the edge of the skirt and armholes and in clusters of three dotting the surface of the frock all over. A narrow black velvet ribbon girdled the waist, being tied in a short loop and long end and bow at the side back, while two streamers of the ribbon extended down either side, forming a sort of panel effect. The color and flower scheme could be varied in innumerable ways. Pale lavender georgette might be dotted with purple violets and purple velvet ribbon used for girdle and panels. yel low would be good with the violet trim, or a pale pink might be trimmed with deeper pink and so on. Using the flowers as a border for the skirt is particularly effective. A velvet or metal ribbon bandeau matching the trimming of the frock may be worn in the hair with very good effect, and the straight bands of ribbon or metal cloth with girls who have bobbed hair—and their number {s said to be increasing. A lovely color scheme could be worked out for a wedding with the bridesmaids’ frocks flower-trimmed in this fashion, fresh flowers of the same kind to be carried by the girls, roses Cool Nightgowns. Hand-embroidered, sheer white nain- sook is made into lovely nightgowns. Tucks, masses of them, are popular in lingerie, supplanting the gathers of former years. They launder well, although a deft hand is required for the act. Plugging Out.
